I think you're right (about clueless execs). I guess my real question is this: If you're the decision maker at a company--the decider let's say, why not call up Analog, or some well known institution with a track-record, and have a talk. I mention Analog 'cause it has the largest distribution of SF magazines and has been around a long time. Just ask what's good, get some authors to speak to. Greg Bear is the director of the SF museum in Seattle--call him up.

It's just not that hard to figure out. And you risk nothing. In the sea of crap the SF channel produces, whatever ratings they have won’t be affected by one movie. But they can get a sense of how it did by an online poll on their site.
You mean you like the crap in between the commercials?

Surely with the money they spend on those they could do some A.C.Clarke books. A remake of 2001 shouldn't be too difficult or even 2010 seeing as hardly anyone has seen the movie. Even the Rama cylinder should be easy with modern C.G.

They ought to put on some of those older films like Earth vs the Flying Saucers. The effects are hillarious, and the royalties can't be much (I get a DVD of 3 films for a £1)

I guess I shouldn't be admitting this, but I think the effects in Earth vs Flying Saucers were pretty good. I think Ray Harryhausen still has a lot to offer. And E vs FS is much better than 90% of what's on the SF Channel--only my subjective opinion.

I have starting referring to sci-fi as the stargate channel. How many hours a day do they think people actually want to watch that show? 90% of the time I turn to sci-fi they are showing some variant of stargate. Hell, most times I'd rather watch a rerun of lost in space than another episode of SG1 or stargate atlantis. what's next...StarGate the next generation?

NBC is really satarting to annoy me.

First, they put that STEWPID soap opera Passions on in the mornings, and now they are running Law and Order.

Can't they keep that crap on the parent network?

SHEESH.
"2012.. "I don't mind the bad SF movies nearly as much as I mind the "psychic reality" shows like John Edwards, those ghost hunting plumber and now this new "talks with dead people" chick they have. If I want to see a magic show I'll go see some honest magicians, not a bunch of con-artists!"

Magic is a bunch of bull, all it is optical allsions, trickery. So are magicans con artisits? In some way yes, they mak you make you pay god money for their shows, and make you belive in things that arnt real.It all depends on your point of view.

Like I said before, I can do bad sci-fi that knows it's bad.

someone mentioned killer clowns from outer space. GREAT MOVIE! Its cheap, funny, and actually entertaining.

I have to confess that I like ghost hunters sometimes. Even if its just to see that "tool" Brian geek out and say "dude, what was that!!" a hundred times.

At least that show doesnt go around spouting things like fakes. They debunk things and dont run around yelling "ghosts" everywhere.

But, back to series and vidcasts...... Barry the Demon Hunter and especially, Venus Rises, are doing things their way and without big budgets.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a382/R-GEN/venus rises/nathan_sig_joseph_negra.jpg

IMO, if one referes to themeselves as an illusionist, they are telling you up front they are not doing anything magical.

If they call themselves a magician, watch your pockets LOL.

My borrowed quote for the time being:

There are three kinds of people in life. Those who make it happen, those who watch it happen...and those who do not know what happened.

As if the bad psychic crap wasn't enough, SciFi now has ECW. That's Extreme Champoinship Wrestling. Who or what is in charge of programming there?

not really. i dont want endless stargate either but ecw should be on a type of channel it belongs on, such as SPIKE.

they just lumped a genre considered "guy" with a channel (sci-fi) and genre (science fiction) considered "guy"

good marketing possibly, bad taste.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a382/R-GEN/venus rises/nathan_sig_joseph_negra.jpg

Dude, stargate sucks ass, it's so played out it is ridiculous. I would rather watch brokeback mountain than sit thru another rerun of stargate SG1 or stargate atlantis or stargate the next generation etc etc etc.

There's more science fiction on Spike TV from 12-5 then in a whole week on the Sci-Fi channel. I remember being somewhat entertained by this channel because I could tune in and at least catch a couple of old star trek re-runs. I dont mind a bad sci-fi movie once in a while, but if you ask me they're doing the genre a disservice by constantly airing all this crap.

Sci-Fi channel does great series/mini-series, but their movies are always awful! It's always a contest to see if their new movie can possibly be worse than the last one. Makes me wonder if maybe they show those movies that young hopefuls make in college. Makes sense, low budget, really cheezy... Would save them tons of money, and fill the empty space between the good stuff...

Rae

Those movies are just awful, Sci-Fi does give us Battlestar Galactica though, and that series to me, can make up for alot of those B-Movies

I don't think it matters if anyone's actually watching them. As long as sponsors are willing to pay for air time, junk TV will live forever.

How about the original Battlestar Galactica. When they ran out of fuel they stopped!
Bob DeWoody
