Hopefully, they'll all be hit by a meteorite before production starts.

Thanks for the reference to the original story. I'll need to check that out.

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Monsters. IMO we're dealing with one of the best movies ever made. As such this film needs to respect the original even more than most remakes.

Interesting note: in Arthur C. Clarke's "List of the best Science-Fiction films of all time" "The Day The Earth Stood Still" is listed just above Clarke's own "2001: A Space Odyssey". What's that tell you?

I'd still rather watch the original "War of the Worlds" any day over the abomination made a couple years ago.

In that case, the Original HG Wells book was even better than the 1950's movie. IMHO, of course

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Monsters. docm,
Thank you very much for the original story....though I will be in deep doo-doo for spending the time, it was well worth the effort.
In an interesting way, the movie preserved the major elements of the parable. The story itself was very much more the "reporter on the scene" genre of the HG Wells War of the Worlds original story vs. the 1st (and only worthwhile) movie. The War of the Worlds Halloween radio broadcast captured the terror in it's own way (especially since the US panicked) but was too short to truely capture the story.
Still I feel the TDtESS movie was a superb screenplay (reminder, look up who did the screenplay!), a faithful representaion of the story.
Wow, what an enlightening experience!!

Thanx again!!

But the Krell forgot one thing John. The final line of the story was tuned right in to the message of The Day the Earth Stood Still, though not expicitlly spoken, it was clear.

SPOILER BELOW

Gort was the master, as they had given the power of existence or extinction to the robots. /safety_wrapper>

But the Krell forgot one thing John. The one with Jake Busey and C. Thomas Howell? Almost as bad as Ghosts of Mars.

I wasted a free movie ticket at Hollywood Video on that one. I should have gotten a refund.

< rumor: this version will more closely follow the source story "Farewell To The Master" by Harry Bates, meaning that Gort (originally Gnut) is actually the commander of the mission. >

Oh. That's not so bad then. I'll have to give it a chance.

I know everyone loves the original, but I have to admit I hate smug aliens! And boy was that alien smug.

Smug? We shot him the minute he comes out of the spacecraft! That isn't smugness. He just treated the people as fairly as you would any missbehaving child who does not know any better.

He was only confident (smug seems like the wrong word) at the end after he had been gunned down, died, and been brought back to life.

Besides, if he was smug, he had good reson.
He knew if he was killed, or earth didn't get the message, there wouldn't be enough of the earth left for the vogons to demolish a century later.

But the Krell forgot one thing John. <Besides, if he was smug, he had good reason.>

Don't get me wrong, I liked the movie.

But you have to admit that on several occasions when his human accomplice Helen Benson (Patrica Neal) voiced some concern, the alien replied with a smirk. Damned smug alien!

As I recall he wasn't exactly an alien. Wasn't he abducted from earth at an early age and trained by the "aliens" to come back to earth and convince us to join the club?
Bob DeWoody

Did you know that episode was an embedded pilot for an Assignment: Earth TV series? Seven was supposed to embody a "James Bond" persona combined with Gene Rodenberry's social themes.

It's a real shame Assignment: Earth wasn't picked up by NBC, but this is also the network that canceled Star Trek and other promising series after short runs.

<Did you know that episode was an embedded pilot...>

It sure played like a pilot. What shameless marketing! Still, it was interesting watching a mod '60s Terri Garr in an early role.
