what would it take for this? & i`m not necessarily talking naked eye. in terms of magnitude or area, let`s say. say something visible with publicly viewed telescopes. wouldn`t this do quite a bit for space efforts? i`ve learned on here that L1 activities or events would be visible as Lunar transits, as some have photograhed ISS in this way.

Between the thin cresent of the old moon and the new moon there is typically one night of dark moon except for a tiny amount of earthshine. A tactical nuke would produce a naked eye flash visable over about 1/3 of Earth. The flash would be spectacular viewed even with a modest telescope under modest light polution conditions. Could we get the public outside to view the event which would only last about one second? The new crater would likely be impressive only if a world class telescope was used. Some enviromentalists would complain about dusting the moon with radio active fall out. Neil

IIRC, a nuke detonated on the moon's surface is likely to loft a great deal of material into the surrounding space. May interfere with orbiting craft and landers for quite a while.

I have seen video footage (shot thru telescope) of laser pulses reflected from Soviet and US mirrors placed on moon.

TPTB went to Dallas and all I got was Plucked !!

So many people, so few recipes !!

Let's clean up this stinkhole !!
