William Shatner, actor of Star Trek fame, has turned down a free ticket on the first passenger flight of SpaceShipTwo. "I don't want to vomit in space and die" is the essential message of the article. Also claims Sigourny Weaver has paid her ticket to Virgin Galactic.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/showbiz/showbiznews.html?in_article_id=403931&in_page_id=1773

It is the Daily Mail, so take it with a grain of salt.

Is "James T Kirk"s opinion of any consequence to the space movement?

Josh

We need a first generation of pioneers.

Yeah well our spacecraft don't have those "inertial dampers"

And he's got PLENTY of inertia!

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Given the way *my* ears have responded to aging (reflected in some issues flying) - I would have to ponder long and hard whether continual vomiting and attempted vomiting would mitigate the enjoyment of the experience.

Wayne

"1) Give no quarter; 2) Take no prisoners; 3) Sink everything." Admiral Jackie Fisher

Are they going to offer his ticket to Patrick Stewart?

Who cares? He's just an actor.

William Shatner on SNL: "Having received all your letters over the years, and I've spoken to many of you, and some of you have traveled... y'know... hundreds of miles to be here, I'd just like to say... GET A LIFE, will you people? I mean, for crying out loud, it's just a TV show! I mean, look at you, look at the way you're dressed! You've turned an enjoyable little job, that I did as a lark for a few years, into a COLOSSAL WASTE OF TIME!"

- Ed Kyle

> Who cares? He's just an actor.
/> William Shatner on SNL:

Excellent quote! I'm just annoyed that he'd shoot off about the VG spacecraft like that. I know he's "just" an actor, but his opinion carries some weight as a space geek among non-space-geeks. I think. Anyway, he's a coward if that quote is accurate.

Shatner on the first commercial SS2 flight would be great advertising. Having him diss the whole effort? We'll have to wait and see.

Josh

We need a first generation of pioneers.

I'd rather see Patrick Stewart go up then Shatner anyways. At least ole Capt Picard was respected by his cast members off the set...
Don't let your sig line incite a gay thread ;>)

What does wagon trains in fantasy land have to do with space exploration? I used to think Star Trek inspired people but in later years I've realized it's fostered ignorance of science and reality.

> What does wagon trains in fantasy land have to do with space exploration? I used to think Star Trek inspired people but in later years I've realized it's fostered ignorance of science and reality.

Trekkies make up the largest segment of "space" people. I agree with your opinion, esp. in light of "technobabble" and warp drives etc. I still think that Shatner could have been less of a butthead in that interview. Another case of Lead, Follow or Get Out of the Way.

josh

We need a first generation of pioneers.

Ummm, you do realize Shatner's reputation IS that he is a butthead? Although it seems like he has come to terms with being a butthead over the last few years. He's much more fun now that he admits he can be an arrogant jerk!

Anyway where did you get the idea Shatner was a space enthusiast to begin with? Besides he is what 75 now? Not really an age most people would want to start taking up extreme sports--a suborbital ride isn't exactly a flight in a Cessna.

> Ummm, you do realize Shatner's reputation IS that he is a butthead?

Sure, but he must have a sensitive side. After all, he did record his own version of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. The audio on this one isn't as good as the track the CBC played. Eh.

I just like writing dramatic headlines.

Josh

We need a first generation of pioneers.
