silicon tubes/balls vs. bucky balls/nanotubes

I was thinking, since silicon has many similar properties to carbon, could we make the equivalent of bucky balls or nanotubes out of it? It would follow the patterns of glass (mirror, telescope, microscope, microchip) so maybe nature has some extremely useful properties hiding on us.
