I read the article, seems rather straightforward and plausible and I am wondering if such "spiral" filters will be available for enthusiasts any time in the near future.. Would be neat to see backyard astronomers finding planets.. Seems like such an obvious method on some level, but then..?

Backyard astronomer indeed! All you need is a 60" mirror and several hundred thousand dollars worth of equipment! What an amazing feat though, and pretty cool technology.
