This story was updated at 11:39 p.m. ET.

A Russian Soyuz spacecraft landed safely in Kazakhstan late Tuesday to return a cosmonaut and two astronauts back home from the International Space Station after nearly six months in space.

The Soyuz TMA-17 spacecraft touched down on at about 11:25 a.m. EDT (0325 Wednesday GMT) on the central steppes of Kazakhstan in Central Asia with Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kotov and two crewmates – one each from the United States and Japan – onboard. It was 9:25 a.m. Wednesday local time at the landing site.

Recovery crews reported that the Soyuz capsule had tilted on its side after landing, which has happened before, but overall it was a smooth landing, NASA officials said.

SDC : Touchdown! Soyuz Spaceship's Landing Jets Fire in Photo

A spectacular shot of a Russian Soyuz spacecraft landing on the steppes of Kazakhstan shows the bright blaze of the spacecraft's thrusters firing just before it touched down Wednesday morning (local time).

NASA photographer Bill Ingalls took the photo from a recovery helicopter as the Soyuz TMA-17 capsule safely returned Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kotov, NASA astronaut Timothy "T.J." Creamer, and Japanese spaceflyer Soichi Noguchi back to Earth after six months onboard the International Space Station. The trio served as members of the Expedition 22 and 23 crews.

Parachutes helped slow the descent of the Soyuz TMA-17 spacecraft as it plummeted down from Earth orbit. In the final minutes the thrusters helped further ease off the speed of the capsule to enable a soft landing at 9:25 a.m. Wednesday local time (11:25 p.m. Tuesday EDT).

SDC : Video Shows Soyuz Spaceship Landing Like Never Before

A new video of the recent landing of a Russian Soyuz spacecraft shows the touchdown on the Central Asian steppes of Kazakhstan from a rare ground-based view of the space capsule's jarring touchdown.

A camera mounted on a Russian Search and Recovery all-terrain vehicle captured a unique video perspective of the Soyuz TMA-17 spacecraft carrying the International Space Station's Expedition 23 crew on June 2. The capsule touched down with the help of parachutes and thrusters east of the town Dzezhgazkan on the steppes of Kazakhstan.

The video shows the parachute's deployment and the cloud of dirt that the spacecraft kicks up as it hits the ground with a jolt. Recovery crews can be seen scrambling to open up the capsule and retrieve the three spaceflyers inside. All-in-all, it was a standard and uneventful landing, according to NASA and Russia's Federal Space Agency.
