OK you have invented a stargate say here on earth. How would you get one to your destination planet? Wouldn't you have to go there physically to set up the receiving gate? If so it would take thousands of years to set up the entire system.
Bob DeWoody

IIRC, SG canon states that the stargate network was implaced by some super advanced race of "ancients".

since once you started building the network, you could use the stargates themselves to speed the process up.

Yes, but the only thing that would be sped up would be the trip back to your home planet, through the stargate. Otherwise, getting new stargates to new locations would still take a long time.

You set up gate A on your home planet, fly to an alien planet to set up gate B, jump through gate B to get back to gate A on your home planet, build gate C, then fly to another alien world to set up gate C, eventually jumping through gate C to get back to gate A on your home planet.

You could then go from A to C, or C to B, or B to C. Yet, if you want to set up new gates on additional planets, it would still take the trip on your ship through the means of hyperspacial travel.

Techies: We do it in the dark.

"Put your hand on a stove for a minute and it seems like an hour. You could also build gates on planets B and C and transport them from your ship there to even farther regions of the local galaxy. Or transport many gates and DHD's on your ship and just travel from system to system setting them up as you go. You would then send someone back, gate by gate programing addresses into the DHD's.

I think it would have been better though if the watery scene in the center of the activated gate would have become an image of what lay beyond on the other side. Easier to see if it were an underwater gate or orbital gate before you got there.

Then you could have made a gatemole to bore out of burried gates and made even more planets accessable
