This forum deals with telescopes and stuff, so I thought this is the best place to get some help with my problem.

Any summer night I take my telescope out to look at stars and planets, it seems like hundreds of bugs, specially mosquitoes, also like to take a peek at the stars through my telescope - and I'm on their way. So they take the option of biting to remove me from the scope.

Anyone has found out any 100% effective method to discourage these star gazers and keep them 10ft away from me? I must emphasize spraying anything on my skin is not an option. I'd rather take bug-bites than spray chemicals on my skin.
Earth is Boring

OK, seriously, do not use any fragrant products after your showers.

Any such fragrance is likely to attract bugs.

Encourage bats in your neghborhood.
Bats are your friend, they eat BUGZ.

Encourage birds in your neighborhood, they eat BUGZ.

Make sure there are no even tablespoon sized pools of water.
Mosquitos breed there.

Use no light other than the minimum you need.
Light attracts BUGZ.

I have no problem with bugs despite my dozens of hours of observing at the NJAA by following these rules.

Also, remember, mosquitos (most species) like to eat you during dusk.

If you wait an hour until astro twilight, most will have retired for the night.

That's my advice, and as I said, I have no problem.....

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Yes.

Napalm the entire area. Works every time.

(Of course, you have to wait till the raging inferno and then smoke is gone. four-five days, tops!)

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

No, seriously, I'm having this problem every year. I live in the south (USA), and bugs are plenty and very aggressive here.
There are no bats, birds, or water where I setup my telescope . Fragrance from my hair spray wear off by 10:00 or 11:00 at night.

The problem is my skin is very sensitive (I know that comment doesn't match a guy) to bug-bites or even bugs crawling on skin. Now I'm afraid to take out the telescope to an open area because of inevitable bug-attacks and am missing some of the fantastic starry nights which are rare in the south.
Earth is Boring

That's why I use a portable strong nuclear force field generator.

The mosquitoes don't seem to be developing as much resistance to that the way they do with the napalm.

TPTB went to Dallas and all I got was Plucked !!

So many people, so few recipes !!

Let's clean up this stinkhole !!

Perhaps so.

Of course, it's a bit difficult to assault hapless stargazers when you're a chunk (a tiny chunk at that) of carbon. Interferes with moving and flying and all those routine functions.

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

bugs are attracted to light, and CO2... a citronella candle placed not too far away would help.

avon makes this stuff called "Skin-so-Soft." that stuff works miracles!! dont be a wuss (avoiding "chemicals"), we're all gonna die of something anyway.

switch to fragrance-free soaps, deodorants, laundry soaps, etc. scented soaps draw the bugs.

citronella and eucalyptus oils work but have limitations as to how long and how well they discourage bites. for any repellants to do what it does best, ya shouldnt follow package directions closely. its just as important not to use too much as not to use too little.

Edit: forgot a good tip i heard once...A bottle of crown royal and an ice pick is all you need. The crown royal kills the pain. The ice pick kills the bugs.

If you access to 110v outside, a box fan (or even better, a stand fan) gently blowing on yourself, will blow the little buggers away!

Tape a note to the Crown Royal bottle as a reminder not to use the ice pick for bugs on your legs

But the Krell forgot one thing John. This tricks sounds good. I usually setup my telescope in my front yard or backyard, 120V fan can easily reach my telescope location.

A bottle of crown royal

If I take a bottle of crown royal with me, next morning I'll claim 'I have seen dark matter'. But I'll try the candle and oil.

So far I have used cheap mosquito repellent smoke and ultrasonic electronic gadgets claimed to repel bugs, but neither is effective.

Thanks guys.

Earth is Boring
