If the Odyssey series by Arthur C. Clarke were to be made into a new series of movies, what changes would you make? I figure we would have to change the name of the first two movies and the time in which they are set. Anything else?

Will Pittenger
Add this user box to your Wikipedia User Page to show your support for the SDC forums:
{{User:Will Pittenger/User Boxes/Space.com Account}}

That's the thing about 2001, it was so ahead of its time that you couldn't do a remake so much as just a mere re-filming. If someone did have the cajones to do a remake (and somehow managed to evade the inevitable assassin's bullet) then all we would get would be a slightly snazzier special effects extravaganza with the whole first and third acts missing and the plot boiled down to an action/suspense scifi film centered around HAL trying to kill the crew. I doubt that there would be so much as a mention of the whole monolith/stargate plot.

So, again we are defeated. They would have to get rid of the Pan Am Clipper seen near the beginning, since Pan Am went TU years ago. I'm thinking they could replace it with the Delta Shuttle.

The 2010 addition is not likely to come to pass, especially Jupiter igniting to become a second star in our system.

My borrowed quote for the time being:

There are three kinds of people in life. I love that pan-am. If you get rid of that because it is a flaw, do we also have to rename the movie to 2040ish?

Hi Qso, is your argument that a jupiter-size sun wouldnt be stable? Since it was built by von neumann machines they could have built any of a number of machines that would serve the same purpose as a sun. If you dont like the idea of a jupiter sized lamp aiming at you, how about if they converted the core to fissionable materials? Also the increased density might enable fusion at just the core? Lots of ways to rationalise our way out of that one

The ironic part about 2001 is that it seems to have been way off in its forecast of our space capability as it actually was in 2001 except for two things. We did have a winged vehicle docking with a space station during 2001 albiet on a much smaller scale...space shuttle and ISS.

My borrowed quote for the time being:

There are three kinds of people in life. to me 2001 didnt fail in forecasting. It will always be the future we could have had.

We shouldnt expect good SF to tell us what the future will be but what it can be. Even better is one that gives us a recipe to get there.

On this I totally agree, unless the author is somehow implying that his vision is the one which will come to pass. Clarke did not do this to my knowledge.

In general, I'm not aware of many sci fi writers who would claim they have a vision of the future. If anything, they will tell you they are simply extrapolating from present day.

One thing I found particularly interesting in your comment was "The future we could have had". When I mentioned my graphic novel series and that it was about the future...I sometimes commented that its not a future that we are destined for, its a possible future (A future we could have) based on two major events occuring. Sci fi writers and myself know were not clairvoyant but we would like to think as you mentioned, we can show a better recipe for getting to the future we think would be better in some ways.

My borrowed quote for the time being:

There are three kinds of people in life. Thats for sure, I grew up during that era and recall the comic book adds showing that 2001 was just 33 years away.

My borrowed quote for the time being:

There are three kinds of people in life. Someone here has a tag line that asks where the flying cars, SSTs or something to that effect, etc are. And it seems true. Mars is still two decades from human footfalls, fusion power still 50 years from practicality, SSTs still too difficult to produce economically, even human spaceflight is still trapped in LEO because we were unable to develop low cost access to orbit.

Maybe 2001 was supposed to have been 2101.

My borrowed quote for the time being:

There are three kinds of people in life. Getting back to the original idea here -- I could see several directors who might be able to pull off a true treatment of 'The Sentinal'.

A remake of the actual '2001' screenplay ... I don't know.

I agree, 2001 would be a tough screenplay to redo and have it do as well as the original. Then if its too modified, it ends up like Godzilla did.

I'm not familiar with the Setinel, was that the origin of 2001?

My borrowed quote for the time being:

There are three kinds of people in life. Actually, that and Clarke setting everything in 2001 was why I picked 2001 for this thread rather than something else.

Will Pittenger
Add this user box to your Wikipedia User Page to show your support for the SDC forums:
{{User:Will Pittenger/User Boxes/Space.com Account}}

Yes - The Sentinal [the basis of 2001] - eddie mentioned it above, and I agreed with his assessment that that is probably the only way you could pull this "remake" off.

I vaguely recall something called "The Sentinal" in association with 2001 but I don't recall reading it. Not suprising, I'm more of a visual person that is...I do movies rather than books. Most folks prefer books over movies.

My borrowed quote for the time being:

There are three kinds of people in life.
