Testing capabilities on STS-61

After doing basic research on this mission from online sources i still have one question. While doing the ten days of repairs and work on the telescope, what kind of testing capabilities did we have? Could every component be tested while they were still working on it? Was it tested after the repairs with the shuttle in proximity expecting for another dock? I think someone just needs to point me in the direction of a book.
