I think there has been a mix-up, all I see is a space shuttle.

I hear you ASCAN, I hear you.

There are much better pictures of a Shuttle - but I'm seeing you as noting this has historic overtones with it being a Return to Flight.

I think there has been a mix-up, all I see is a space shuttle<

Don't forget the ET and SRBs

I might as well jump on your case before somebody else does, they might not be as forgiving as me. The SRB's, the ET, and the Orbiter make up a Space Shuttle. It is a common, but nearly unforgivable, mistake to refer to the Orbiter as the "Shuttle"

The Space Shuttle is the Orbiter. The Stack is the Space Transportation System (STS) ?

>No the SRBs, ET and Orbiter when mated are the STS. The Orbiter is the Orbiter.<

That's what I was saying?

There's some work to be done with the site (graphics and content) but yeah, it's not finished yet, but the four stories I've put on have hit into the five figure range combined, so a nice start. Anyway, this thread isn't about the site.

S_G

What is the thick black band on the top of the left SRB? Is it to tell one SRB from the other or something more complex?

Shuttle-RTF

I was just joking, please don't be offended. I remember a while back that I made a similar "mistake" I think everyone here has. About a year ago, somebody said that 90% of of a rocket's weight was "fuel" and somebody corrected him that only roughly about 45% of the weight was fuel, and 45% was oxidizer. Actually it wasn't a 45% to 45% but more like 55%-35% IIRC.

Oh I wasn't offended mate In fact I'm nothing short of utterly grateful for the continued guidance you guys are freely passing on - by way of major facts or accurate terminology.

It's even more important now that this is the case - with me writing about it all (and writing as often as possible as it's going to take a while to get it up to standard.)

Ya, definitely not beautiful, very poor design, inherently dangerous, solid boosters on a manned vehicle, no boost phase escape system, manned unit in the fuel tank turbulence and debris field, aluminum wings, unbelievable really, but all we got right now.
