10) an oldie, but a goodie: cavorite

9) and practically the same thing: flubber

8) made famous in Alien, molecular acid dissolves anything, except, strangely enough, aliens

7) deutronium fueled the Jupiter 2, and IIRC was an explosive also

6) carbonite, handy if you need to store any Jedis for a while

5) kryptonite, like liver to the Fonz, so to kryptonite to Superman

4) mimetic poly-alloy, always love hearing Ahhhnold pronounce that one in Terminator 2

3) latinum, a convenient means of exchange in the Ferengi orbit

2) duranium, what spaceship hulls are made of. Probably Kirk's truss too . . .

1) dilithium (!) It's what Scotty makes the spark plugs for the Enterprise out of

TPTB went to Dallas and all I got was Plucked !!

So many people, so few recipes !!

Let's clean up this stinkhole !!

Unobtainium is slang for something hard to get or very expensive and has been around since at least the early 80's that I'm aware of. Its appearance in The Core was just a tip of the hat.

Here's a fun one:

Trioxin (aka 2-4-5 trioxin) is a fictional nerve agent. It is depicted as a greenish or whitish vapor, typically stored under pressure in large steel drums. It was originally developed by the fictional Darrow Chemical Company for the United States military as an herbicide to destroy marijuana plants; however, the Army was quite surprised when the gas also restored life to cadavers, dismembered body parts, and even dead animals and insects. Moreover, trioxin appears to be toxic, and a single exposure can both kill a person and revive them again.

TPTB went to Dallas and all I got was Plucked !!

So many people, so few recipes !!

Let's clean up this stinkhole !!

He'd probably smoke it anyways. Thereby turning himself into a weed-addled Zombie. With the Munchies. Which, if you think about it, isn't so good for the "normals" nearby. The guy would call and order a Pu-Pu Grey Matter Platter for 15. And eat the delivery boy's brain as an appetizer.

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

Hey man, I just had to look that word up in a dictionary. What do I know about the internal workings of that destructive cult.

However, I accept completely what you are trying to say, so, allow me to amend causuality and say

Eucharist!.

Neutronium.

Although the word has a legitimate use, it has been used frequently in science fiction, usually as an armor.

Yes, well I found the reference in my "Illustrated History of Buck Rogers," also given as a present. Probably a bit of slop room in the naming of the substances and plotlines, I think.

PS, I have also read Nowlon's book several times.

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

Here's a science fictiony substance with a twist:

salt water (in Alien Nation)

It's ability to dissolve and disfigure the Tenctonese is pretty weird if you think about it.

TPTB went to Dallas and all I got was Plucked !!

So many people, so few recipes !!

Let's clean up this stinkhole !!
