What did I see?

Many years ago, before going to sleep, while lying in bed, I observed a phenomena that I can't explain. A bright white light shot out from the top of my wall, and entered my stereo speaker to the side of my bed. I was startled, and just froze. I didn't even turn my head to look at the speaker, I was too scared. I just closed my eyes and went to sleep. Was it some kind of spirit? <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> </div>

I would also advise against using this word given the numerous contexts in which it may be interpreted, making you sound like someone you think you don't sound like <img src="/images/icons/tongue.gif" />. (yes your eyes) Speed of target as a function of time................... Shadows (yes/no).............. Depth perception active (yes/no)................ Lights on (yes/no)..................... Window (yes/no) Door open (yes/no) Electronic equipment on (yes/no) Ever struck by lightning (yes/no) Dreams of balls of light (yes/no) Previous belief in balls of light (yes/no) Country of occurence (state state if possible) etc.

It was a stereolus. They are like apparitions. Older computer systems get a variant of them too. Most likely your equipment is really old and you need to upgrade to a new 7.1 surround system. <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> TPTB went to Dallas and all I got was Plucked !!So many people, so few recipes !!Let's clean up this stinkhole !! </div>

Seriously! It sounds like a electric current was traveling from the wall to the stereo. Why is another question! By far, the best explanation. As it was moving towards the side of my head, the ball of light streched, or spread, or was elongated. The only other question I have is did the energy come from outside the house, and flow thru it? Or did it come from another dimension? <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> </div>

It was most likeley Tinkerbell..........beware !!!!!..she is not the loveable little fairy you think of..........but a nasty little elemental that comes in that moment between awake and sleep...to steal your soul and poop in your slippers. Hello, I'm a newbie here. Coming home last night at about 11PM Mountain Time I saw the brightest, most colorful and dynamic object I've ever seen streaking across the night sky. I live about 250 miles south of Denver CO in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado. It burst across the sky as a white ball before suddenly getting larger and bursting into a luminescent green and exploding into a brilliant orange/white fire, lighting up everything around. I imagine it was a large meteor, but could anyone elaborate on this phenomenon for me, e.g. could you hazard a guess as to how large this thing might have been, etc. Thanks, Richard

Spunds like an exceptional fireball, possibly an early Lyrid, though just as likely it was just a sporadic meteor. (See Lyrid thread in this forum) How bright was it, say compared to the full moon? Can you give any estimate of what direction and how high in the sky it started and ended? MEanwhile, I'll check and see if any fireballs were reported over the western US last evening. CAn you be any more precise than ~ 11 PM EDT? Hi richard284, Welcome to Uplink! You may have seen a meteorite that's part of the Lyrid meteor shower. Earth passes through the tail of comet Thatcher every year in late April. I believe best sightings should be this weekend, so you may have hit the jackpot! <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> *** </div>

Hello Meteor Wayne, Thanks for your reply. The most accurate time I can give is between 11 PM and 11:10 PM Mountain Daylight Savings Time. The direction of flight was West/North West (at least, that's the direction of the meandering road I was traveling). On a map, take a look at Colorado Route 149 as it goes from South Fork to Creede. The event took place about six miles from South Fork. Brightness Compared to the Moon? Hmmm. Well, it varied you know, steadily getting brighter as it went from a spherical compact white, to a broader luminescent green, to a brilliant orange white flash, with a trailing brightness as it proceeded. I think the intensity of the compact white surely rivaled the brightness of a full moon on a relative size scale. But when the orange/white flash occurred, (with a full moon being ten), I'd give it between about a 6 or 7as to its affect in brightening the landscape. When it exploded, it was quite brilliant, like a fire beyond the hill. How high in the sky. Very difficult to ascertain. I was driving up a canyon with very steep walls. Fortunately, the meteor's path paralleled the canyon before disappearing beyond the meandering canyon's skyline in front of me . The brilliant explosion seems to have taken place maybe at the top of or just beyond the skyline. I was quite surprised at how long the whole event lasted. Unlike most meteors one sees, there would have been plenty of time to say to someone, "hey look at that!" I've looked at the "Fireball report" site. they request some pretty detailed information, and I just don't know if I have enough to make it worth while. I appreciate your's and other's comments as well. Thanks to all. Oh, one other thing. Do you have an idea of how big something like this might have been? Richard

Well, that's some reasonably good info you recalled. Maybe try and fill out the form as best you can. Believe it or not, it's as much useful info as most fireball reports, since they are rarely (Murphy's Law) seen by experienced meteor observers who know what data to record in advance <img src="/images/icons/smile.gif" /> If we assume it was a Lyrid (which is possible considering your description) it was travelling 49 km/sec (30 miles/sec or 108,000 mph), just ballparking it was probably a kg or two (2-4 lbs) and maybe a foot across.
