However, since the payload is going into geosynchronous orbit, which is in the plane of the equator, the direction it launches should be due east.
Edit: Eliminate "slightly south of east". In trying to achieve an orbit in the equatorial plane one must launch with minimum inclination and maximum energy, this can only happed from a station not on the equator by launching due east.
