If the universe is expanding, then it is occupying more space. What is the space it grows into or displaces?

Probably more universes. Ours bloomed out of our predescessor, and our universe is giving rise to other universes. The whole of everything could be like a living organism replicating itself by splitting its cells off to form its offspring. Special Relativity states that we cannot know for sure what lies outside our lightcone, so we cannot be sure.

Xylem? What is that? Is it some type of empty space?

No one will never know what exists outside of the universe. You have to be dead to find that out.

True Knowledge Exist in Knowing That You Know/b> NOTHING
We are born. We live. We experiment. We rot. We die. and the whole process starts all over again! Imagine That!

Perhaps it's expanding into nothing.. The universe is creating it's own space.
IIRC, xylem is the name given to the primordial substance by a big name astronomer back in the forties. Hoyle, Bondi, Gamow, one of 'em.

Early ideas on cosmology are interesting to compare with current views.

TPTB went to Dallas and all I got was Plucked !!

So many people, so few recipes !!

Let's clean up this stinkhole !!

Xylem (according to biology) is the tissue in a plant that draws water up the roots and stem.

Stamin, pistol, forceps, all that biology stuff just never had the draw for me that space does.

TPTB went to Dallas and all I got was Plucked !!

So many people, so few recipes !!

Let's clean up this stinkhole !!

I love all the branches of science. There is so much that I do not know and it would take a thousand lifetimes to learn it all. How wonderfully amazing is that?

Sorry if that was a little off-topic. I was just clarifying what xylem is...no idea how it is used to reference the area outside the known universe. Just one more thing to learn I suppose!

Glad there are folks in to bio-sciences. Living 'out in the wild' as I do, just am more exposed to biology than most folks, and some times its a bit much.

TPTB went to Dallas and all I got was Plucked !!

So many people, so few recipes !!

Let's clean up this stinkhole !!

Outside the universe of matter as we know it is simply empty space. I do not think you would like to be there. So God created matter so as not to be alone.

Alkalin
Mountain lion in backyard eating a deer carcass.

TPTB went to Dallas and all I got was Plucked !!

So many people, so few recipes !!

Let's clean up this stinkhole !!

Western Iowa, of all places. Mountain lion thing is a new phenomena in last 10 years. Granted, we have too many deer, and I don't mind them being set upon by vicious predators, but I live adjacent to State owned nature area, and nature is just to close. When I was a kid, that property was used for cattle grazing, competition for food resources kept deer away. Cattle long gone due to unstable prices and tax situation. Deer came back, and eventually, so did a top tier predator.

My younger brother (a sneaky cuss) got within 20 feet of the mountain lion once. Survived. Not sure why he did it.

A 'sweet little old lady' nailed a mountain lion with her buick 20 miles east of here a couple of years ago. Sightings are common enough now the sheriff doesn't bother checking out the calls any more.

Had a skunk experience a while back that could have been ghastly. Fortunately, the little guy was very surprised I was messing with him, and he held his fire long enough for me to realize I was not swatting a raccoon with my broom.

TPTB went to Dallas and all I got was Plucked !!

So many people, so few recipes !!

Let's clean up this stinkhole !!

My guess is:

Nothing.

No space, no time, no matter, no energy. It's undefinable.

Unless mainstream theory is in error, we have a visable universe that extends out 13.7 billion light years from Earth's present location. Reasonably there is more universe in some directions beyond what we can see. Some experts have supposed that our total universe has a diameter of as much as 100 billion light years. Usual thinking is there is not even space just outside this larger Universe. We would be very conceited to think Earth is at the exact center of this larger Universe. Neil

If it can be shown that BB theory is a good predictor of something, anything, in the universe, I might be tempted to follow the exotic theory of BB into the never universe where it was tooo long ago, or it is tooo far away.

I just wish I could have heard Mr. Einstein say it himself.

whats outside the universe? well in reality the universe is just a mind of a higher being, he lives in a persistant alternate universe, kinda like how ants rule the world in their perceptive. the planets and stars and galaxies make up his mind, think about it... we make our god up, not he makes us up. thats why we dont get reassurances from him, its kinda like you tell the pasasites living on you everyday, hey how you doing!! good pasasites! haha what you think?

How about a harmonic energy state - where all is choate.

The mass of our universe was created by a big bang or perhaps colliding branes - resulting in a region where mass and energy interact so as to be inchoate.

Maybe all the planets are shrinking ^^ making it as though more space is formed
