Perihelion = Sun
Perigee = Earth
Perilune = Moon

But what about for a star other than the Sun. Is there a convention for the word if a star's name is known? And is there a generic one for any star other than the Sun?

This is not serious, or, er, Sirius:

If you approach to one meter from Sirius, you would at:

Sirius peri-meter.

Hmm...I've always seen it refered to as perihelion from what I recall. I don't remember it being something else....

--------------------SaiphMOD@gmail.com -------------------

"This is my Timey Wimey Detector. Goes "bing" when there's stuff. It also fries eggs at 30 paces, wether you want it to or not actually. I've learned to stay away from hens: It's not pretty when they blow" -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

Saiph - Tony is correct - I was just being silly.

Note this from dictionary.com for example:

perilune

n : periapsis in orbit around the moon [syn: periselene] [ant: aposelene]

You might compare lunacy and senility (compare selenity)

Like, what is a synonym for a crazy person that is an insect on the moon?

No, it is not:

periplaneta (compare peri-planet)

As in periplaneta furcata, an earth based cockroach.

It is a lunar tick, er, rather: lunatic.

periastron = periapsis around a star
apoastron = apoapsis around a star*

*I've also seen this spelled "apastron", but that may be a typo.

Additionally, "periapsis" is always correct, regardless of what body is being orbited, so it's safe.

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"
