After failing to make something decent out of the War of the Worlds remake, imho, Spielberg is now set to have a go at 1951 classic When Worlds Collide: scientists discover that a rogue planet has entered the solar system and is on a collision course with Earth. I haven't seen it, so if any of you have, I'd love to read what you think about it.

But what's wrong with Hollywood? Can't they make up a new story? Or is Spielberg going to redo every movie he liked during his childhood? Are we going to see Tom Cruise as a scientist now?? *shudder*

I remember reading When Worlds Collide and After worlds Collide. They were both good reading. I didn't like the film of When Worlds collide, but maybe a new one would be better. I hadn't heard about one being made. I will be sure to watch it when it comes to my neighborhood. Thanks for the info. I hope Tom Cruise found something else to do when they made it, I don't like his acting at all.

"I don't like his acting at all."

I wouldn't exactly call that acting.

The remake, using today's technology, would have 700 people working to launch an enhanced space shuttle and the lottery is used to pick the lucky 7 people.

How could you not like the movie? It was as good as another classic Forbidden Planet. But that is just an old fart's opinion. I did have high hopes for War of the Worlds, but was unable to see it until lately. It was alright, but it was NOT a classic remake. And if that is what is in store, then I think they really should pass on it.

But I know not all people like the oldies like I do, so that is alright. But just like some people think others should not colorize some classics, maybe the same thought should be given here. Don't try to improve it, or modernize it, just retell it today.

I am watching the Fantastic four right now, and, I think, even though I may be in the minority, that it was done pretty good. And the X-Men, I don't think, could be done much better at all. So, if they could re-tell those stories that good, why not some of the other REAL classics?

Yes, I did enjoy the sequel as much as the first one. Even though it is dated, it still holds the charm of an original classic.

The adventures the survivors faced on the new planet, with all the dangers and the new enemies could I think hold a plot for a show. It could even be PC in that in the book, there were other nations that did send their own survivors(sp) to this new planet, as I remember it, and they could put to rest all of that huffing and puffing the old nations did to battle the new enemies.

If you could find it, it would be a pretty good read, considering the time it was set and written in.

Crazyeddie,

I would have to say and give a good, if you don't mind the expression, a good amen!, to that observation about why the old movies are still thought of so well. It is to bad that all those special effects capability of today cannot be linked more successfully with all that "storytelling that feels [so] gripping."

saw when world collides and the forbidden planet. liked the latter better...the first one's story and premise had aged a little since 1951 but its still watchable in this star wars III era. ...:)

To Boldly Go Where No Man Has Gone Before...

Live Long and Prosper

But what's wrong with Hollywood? Can't they make up a new story?

As long as a few people go to see it at an overly inflated price (or buy the DVD) then they will make their money back. That’s all they care about…..$$$$$$, not entertainment.

Spielberg shouldn't have to worry about money anymore. I just hope he does a better job with When Worlds Collide than with WotW.

Yeah, I agree. And if Tom is in any other remake, he should meet a horrible, gruesome fate (like being probed by a psychology monster) in the first five minutes of the movie…I’d go see that one

The problem with the original movie "When Worlds Collide" was not with the quite good special affects (for its time anyway) but in the many deviations from the truly terrific book. This was actually kind of sad to me in its lost opportunities.

On the other hand there were some SCI-Fi movies such as "Things To Come", "The Day The Earth Stood Still", "The Thing (original version, not the latest abortion), "The Time Machine", and "Forbidden Planet" (which had by far the best special affects until the truly great "Star Wars!").

All of these movies actually improved upon the original stories.

So IF Spielberg is actually going to improve on the original movie in this case all he has to do is to read the original book, and then come up with a viable screen play that sticks to the original book, and with modern special affects and the right actors (agreed that Tom Cruise would NOT be my first choice) he could have a real winner!

We can only hope!
