Far scarier, especially if they had anything to do with the poisoning of Alexander Litvinenko. That would indicate a very bad trend combined with their strong-arm tactics with the gas pipeline. Have to wait for the isotope analysis for clues as to the Poloniums origin though.

Yes, there's that too. Over a longer term as well they've also been complete d*cks (excuse my language, but there's no more apt term) to Georgia and make no apologies for it. Hopefully Georgia can join NATO post-haste and get all this behind them.

-----

http://mithridates.blogspot.com

MeteorWayne,

Everybody has their own ideas about what is important. And this discussion brought out some things that were not generally known, I believe, as well as giving people a chance to express opinions about some major issues involved in the future of off planet operations.

Thank you, Christine16!

halman
The secret to peace of mind is a short attention span.

Since this is a really long-term poll, I've picked India.

Reasons: Population has passed 1 billion and will pass China's population in a while (ten years or so I think) and is expected to reach 1.8 billion by 2050. While the population has grown the percentage below the poverty line has gone from 54.9% in the 1970s to 26.1% in 2000 and 22% now and continues to decrease. Adding to that the fact that India is a democracy with less secrets and deals better linguistically and culturally with western nations makes me think it'll be the winner in the long run.

Of course then there's also private industry and that's a whole other matter. Even in that India should do well. It's likely to become the world's third largest economy by that time, after China and the US.

-----

http://mithridates.blogspot.com

You realize that the single largest economy is currently that of the European Union both in terms of PPP and nominal? And that with further expansions into Eastern Europe and the accession of Turkey this will most likely be that way in 2020, 2030 and onwards?

China and India's economies grow rapidly, but at some level this growth slows and will not be much higher than the growth of Western countries. In addition China has a lot of troubles dealing with the consequences of their rapid growth of the last years and we will see how that will effect them in the coming years. And please remember, in nominal terms they are still not more important than France, Italy or Germany.

mithridates,

Yes, India is definitely going to be a major player in the long run. Many people don't realize that India has an enormous advantage over China in that India was a British colony for many years, and English is widely spoken. This is important because English is the language of technology (at least, right now it is.) Britain also instituted widespread mass education in India, which has continued long after Britain gave up the colony and granted India its independence.
The secret to peace of mind is a short attention span.
