The fact that all the cool astronomical features we had to search the sky for ages to discover, Captain kirk keeps running his spaceship into by accident: Nova's black holes asteroids on collisions with planets.. The chances of encountering a civilisation just as it faces an astronomical threat are astronomically small.

Simple. Niven stated as much:

"a disintegrator that fires a beam to suppress the charge on the electron. Where a disintegrator beam falls, solid matter is rendered suddenly and violently positive. It tears itself into a fog of monatomic particles."

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

My favorite example of strange sci-fi physics is in Star Trek. No, not the "sound" that the phasers make when firing in the vacuum of space -- or the fact that everybody from one end of the galaxy to the other speaks a southern California variety of English.

No, it's this: when the Enterprise and another vessel encounter one-another in the darkness of space, they always manage somehow to meet up in a right-side-up attitude relative to each other. How is it that ships from thousands of different space-faring cultures zooming through the vastness of three-dimensional space never seem to fly in any way other than right-side-up?

It's like they're all on some sort of galactic asphalt ribbon where it's just the natural thing to keep the shiny side up and the greasy side down.
Just tell the truth and let the chips fall...

How do you tell which side of a Borg cube/sphere/diamond, Suurok-class Vulcan or some of the Xindi ships is "up" ?

Even the Borg cubes swoop in with flat surfaces facing squarely up and down -- and with one surface squarely (as it were) facing the Enterprise (or whoever they're trying to assimilate).
Just tell the truth and let the chips fall...

I recall a V saucer hovering with an elaborate conglomeration of plumbing leading down a mountain side terminating in a lake.

I found the image striking as the power to levitate the ship and pump the water up to it could have been saved by literally setting the craft in the water directly and opening a stopcock . . .

TPTB went to Dallas and all I got was Plucked !!

So many people, so few recipes !!

Let's clean up this stinkhole !!

And who says it isn't some variation on macroscopic quantum tunneling?

Also;

Skin is new every five weeks.
Skeleton is entirely new every three months.
At the end of ~7-8 years every cell in the body has been replaced.

Your memories etc. are the result of neural connections and your brains overall structure which is yours alone; essentially a physical pattern created by your DNA, experiences and environmental factors.

If that is transmitted during the tunneling process what's the difference?

In reply to:

teleportation: how come everyone submits willingly to being vaporized and then reconstructed somewhere else, which means the original is destroyed - and a perfect clone takes your place, but it isn't YOU!

If you are worried about that, You should also worry about falling asleep. There is absolutely no way science will ever prove you are really you from day to day, and not someone who just happens to have the same memories and form. Evolution does not care if every night your 'quantum soul' :)p) is being dragged away screaming by maxwell's demons of the id, and replaced with a spanking new one. At some point you just have to throw up your arms and admit we just cant tell the difference so probably it doesnt matter.

Sleep well
