The world-wide Yuri's Night space party is April 12th. The URL is http://www.yurisnight.net I am setting up the Providence RI party and want to invite any locals to the event.

What are good ways to present "space" in a fun way to the crowd that didn't drink the Space Cadet Koolaid? I've got a decent playlist for a couple hours of space music, some best-costume prizes (tshirts, model spacecraft). I'll set up a PC to run Google Earth. Next weekend we're going to build a UFO. I'd like to have a telescope but it's in the city. Any suggestions?

If I can find enough video projectors there will be a "ground track" animation pointed at a sheet on the floor. With the hi-res images NASA and Malin provide, an observer will see themselves flying over Mars, Europa, etc.

Any ideas? If there isn't a party in your area, please consider throwing one.

http://www.yurisnight.net

(If this belongs in bus&tech, mods plz move it)

Josh

We need a first generation of pioneers.

if you are in an area that has some higher rise buildings you could still have a telescope. get permission from the owners of the buildings to project space themed images on them and then you could point the telescope around to see them.

That way you would still have the feeling of "observing" something

Venus is still high in the western sky, it's something to observe. We're in a dense mixed-use neighborhood so it's a lot of low buildings and light pollution.

Are there any telescopes online, that have live feeds or take requests? Anyone else running/attending a party? I've got ideas that I'm implementing but am hoping for some feedback.

Josh

We need a first generation of pioneers.

I could whip up something on Google Maps for you, code to paste onto any site, once that site signs up for a key with Google.

It could show all the party locations. They all have lat-long listed, so it would be quite easy. Other features?

spacester- a google map mashup would be way cool. Not sure if it's possible given the timeframe, but being able to click on each location and get their webpage/webcam would rock.

Anyone know any online telescopes? SOmething we can pull a feed from? Any other suggestions?

there are under 100 parties planned so far. Anyone on this board is more than capable of throwing a party. Please consider it if there isn't one in your area!

Thanks,
Josh

We need a first generation of pioneers.

Ok, the party is in a few days.
http://www.yurisnight.net/2007/

Anyone else attending/throwing a party?

I'm looking for good space images to put into a slideshow. Any links or threads? Even better is animation/video of space stuff that I can stream or download. I'll link to my Youtube channel with space vids in another post.

Anyone here that cares about space should try to take part in Yuri's Night - it's easy and fun.

Josh

We need a first generation of pioneers.

I'm going to make at least an appearance at my old school, Boston University, who's also throwing a small event.

If I have the time, I may well make an appearance at the one in Providence too. I'll let you know shortly.

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

I'm going to try to go to Griffith Observatory in LA. Some folks from unmanned spaceflight are headed there, too.

I'm a recovering optimist - things could be better.

If it weren't for the fact that Thursday is a schoolnight, I'd do something. I just hope CalliBaby 1.0's school does something in honor of the occasion.

But we will make sure to do spacey stuff at home. If I'd planned ahead, I'd have astronaut ice cream and Tang with our dinner, but I might try to make simulated space food for dinner, and maybe bake a cake in the shape of a Vostok rocket. The kid can wear her moon boots to the dinner table, and we can watch launch footage while we eat. I don't have much Russian launch footage, but I do have a lot of American launch footage that we can enjoy. Hmmm.... I've no chance of making any of the space parties, but maybe a quiet space party at home would be fun.

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

Calli- that sounds like a fun family-oriented Yuri's Night.

I'm putting together a "space channel" on Youtube and will share the link before that evening. Don't bother duplicating effort, I'll make available by Thursday mid-day on this thread. Put it in full-screen on a big monitor/TV and watch the spacy goodness.

The weather isn't looking good here, but I'm still throwing the Providence party. (snow in April - argh!)

One thing I'm looking for is free slideshow software for Windoze or Linux that does the "Ken Burns effect" on a folder of images. Our Macintosh is older and doesn't have the right viewer.

Josh

We need a first generation of pioneers.

Im actually giving my Spring Adult Education lecture on meteors that night. So I guess I'm doing my part

I will coordinate with the other lecturer Steve (doing "The Moon ") to make sure we mention the occasion.

Of course we have to leave a little time for a short round of "Is PLuto a PLanet or not?" since he's the one I did the great debate at the NJAA with on that subject

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Ok, I'm in terminal decent phase for the party. Here is a Youtube playlist that is a couple hours long. I'll have it running in the background on Thursday, please share it:

http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=1CD69623D2AD01AA

It's also embedded on my party page:

http://www.postcardstospace.com/yuri.html

I hope everyone that makes it to a party has a blast. Everybody else, stay spacey.

josh

We need a first generation of pioneers.

Great day, great party, great Google. We had 2 live acts in our 900ft^2 house, several videos and a great time. The weather and venue issues plagued the production, but it went off without a hitch in the end! Next year we rave til dawn.

Josh

We need a first generation of pioneers.
