Then she was paid (I was uncertain). That would have been Steph, aka PLC.

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

Alright you amateurs, I'm new to astronomy. Reading the basic Dummies & Idiot's books, which are quite good. Also reading Timothy Ferris. I purchased the basic Starry Night program for my computer. Went to a meeting of the local astronomy club here in West Palm Beach at the planetarium. I might just as well have been invisible. They are not interested in new members. Very tight group surprised to see someone new there. I was very disappointed, because I was hoping to learn from those folks and make new friends.

Now I have you folks! I don't have a question right now. I just wanted to come out and introduce myself. Oh. We got whacked by Hurricane Wilma here three years ago. Power was out in my town for two weeks. The first night after the storm all the neighbors were out in the street gaping up at the sky. They had never seen so many stars before! Sure. Without the local light pollution--the whole town was dark--it was incredible. That's when I decided I wanted to learn my way around the night sky. Look forward to hearing from you folks!

I once talked to a FEMA dispatcher who had manned the phones after the Northride CA earthquake. She told me she got tons of calls from pretty panicky people about the lights in the sky and was there a really bad fire nearby etc, etc.

Took them about a half hour to figure out all these people were seeing the profusion of stars for the first time, and weren't realizing that the sky should look like that.

--------------------SaiphMOD@gmail.com -------------------

"This is my Timey Wimey Detector. Goes "bing" when there's stuff. It also fries eggs at 30 paces, wether you want it to or not actually. I've learned to stay away from hens: It's not pretty when they blow" -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

They come in all shapes and sizes and styles; some are like that. Our club is very supportive of new members, but it's a long drive to NJ :)

We had a power failure here on Oct 28th, but it was too local to effect the local light pollution. Besides, the road to the observatory was closed by snow and downed tree branches. The LP not horrible here (though it's not good either), I can still do useful meteor observations many clear nights.

Meteor Wayne

But the Krell forgot one thing John. I've read that the atmospheric conditions in Florida can be superb for viewing the planets....something about the laminar airflow of the tropics. I believe there is a star party held down there on the Florida keys every year....maybe you could go to that to chat up some people, if your local club is not very friendly.
