Bright, twinkling stars

This is probably the most basic of questions, however I need to ask. While staying at a hunting camp in Central Ontario on the weekend of February 10-12, I was outside at around midnight when I noticed two stars that were unusually bright, and twinkling. Almost directly south (and slightly west), fairly low in the horizon was a bright star that changed colour, I believe mostly blue, red and yellow. I've noticed this star before when at this camp, but have never been able to determine what it is. Any ideas?
Also, more to the west and higher in the horizon was another star blinking in the same way, however not as distinctive in colours.
If you can give me some hints, and some places to research, I'd be most appreciative.

Dave Woodside
Havelock, ON

I believe that would be Sirius. It's the brightest star in the sky especially where you describe it to be.

Cheers
