Do you actually read any posts that people make in response to you? Actually READ them?

I said you've come CLOSER to breaking them. I never said you did break them.

One Percent of Federal Funding For Space: America CAN Afford it!! LEO is a Prison -- It's time for a JAILBREAK!!

I checked out this thead after posting this.

I share your frustration mattblack. The TOS forbids ad hominems and such which is good but just because it doesn't say anything about trolling clueless clowns and kookies why should others put up with such activity? Freedom of speech, yeah right. The zealous anti-everything-but-my-halfbaked-ideas-or-actually-there-is-not-even-any-ingredients-to-show-any-idea-but-I-just-you-know-KNOW-things-better-than-anyone-trust-me-or-I-will-just-repeat-and-SHOUT-my-idea-louder people are free to say their speech in a local pub, HeckIfICare, but preferably not here because a) it really contributes nothing and b) it just may piss some good people away for good. (especially those who have actually worked (or still work!) in space industry).

Now how to deal with the problem? Here's couple suggestions that doesn't require the mods getting more triggerhappy because that would impose a problem of perceived censorship. Censorship is generally bad, I think we all can agree on that. But specifically, it is bad if others do it for you. You doing your own censorship is not such a bad idea. You'll know best what you want to see and what you'd prefer not to see ie. ignore.

The general way to selfcensor is having some kind of list telling what you don't want to see. Usenet news readers have 'killfiles' that contain rulers which posts you want to ignore, it's actually similar to email spam filters. This place could do with a simplified spam filter system. A way to list users whose posts you'd rather ignore, having their posts, the threads and sub-threads they have started disappear into blissful S/N-raising ignorance.

I've seen another more peculiar way in IT-site called theserversid

In reply to:

i will not be bullied out of this forum by three posters who do not like it when someone doesnt agree with them.

Three posters? Come, come, spaceiscool, I think you're being far too modest.

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!

In reply to:

Step 0: Realize that there is virtually nothing the mods or admins can do. That's what makes these &%$#@!s such a menace: they're not stupid enough to violate the Terms Of Service. They are here to play their stupid games and they won't jeopordize their fun by going over the line.

You've been a mod in the past, haven't you? *sigh* You have exactly identified the problem. There are posters (not necessarily spaceiscool) who I personally would love to boot from the forum, but can't because they haven't actually broken any rules. (I probably shouldn't say this, but I put them on a mental list and wait for an infraction!)
In reply to:

Step 2: Identify the trolls. Maybe even go so far as to start polls as a referendum on a particular poster...

Nice idea, but word it very carefully, or it might be taken as a personal attack.
In reply to:

Step 3: Don't feed the Troll.

This is actually the best way to deal with trolls - they live for the reaction, if there isn't one they will soon get bored of shouting into empty space.
In reply to:

Step 4: Modify the TOS to ban users who have been determined to be uncurable trolls, after some sort of due process to establish their status as such.

Ah, but what process? You saw how much hysteria was generated by the decision to more tightly moderate (near) profanity - I don't think we'd be able to come up with a set of criteria that could satisfy even a simple majority of members.

In a way it's my bad, too: I ignored and ignored the nonsense till I just couldn't ignore it no more!

However, I'll take my own and some other's advice and take a break for a few days. Sensible people often have some time out, while the opposite to sensible never quit!!

One Percent of Federal Funding For Space: America CAN Afford it!! LEO is a Prison -- It's time for a JAILBREAK!!

Er... Does anyone know how to shrink the picture in the original post of this thread?

One Percent of Federal Funding For Space: America CAN Afford it!! LEO is a Prison -- It's time for a JAILBREAK!!

I don't think we, as regular members, can edit a post to resize the picture. I think you will have to seek assistance from one of the Mods.

Well said with this thread, BTW. I concur with you 100%.

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!

Another good idea is to use threads that already exist on the specific subject. Why go and create two or more threads on a similar subject? sometimes that can be considered trolling and people lose interest addressing the same subjects over and over when things have already been discussed. Use the search option, although I would call for the improvement of this feature, it isn't really good.

Anyway, this is not intended directly to you offprey5, just a general observation.

"Take all that money that we spend on weapons and defenses each year and instead spend it feeding and clothing and educating the poor of the world, not one human being excluded, and we could explore space, together, both inner and outer, forever, in peace."

Funding social programs was the rational behind gutting NASA's budget after Apollo and it's something that has constantly been given as a reason why NASA shouldn't receive additional funding or should have it's budget cut in the years since then. Take a look at the federal budget and you will find that spending for social programs is higher than for defense, but that has had no effect on the demands for more money for the programs.

Social spending is a bottomless pit that no amount of money will ever fill. No matter how much money is allocated it won't be enough and the demands to raid space programs for additional funds will only end when there is no space program left to raid.

Well it is also true that social problems deviate the technological progress, so ending or minimizing these problems could set a good base to further technological development. I agree that many social programs nowadays are not good, we have those on every nation. The trick is doing it on a effective way, which isn't the case now IMHO. I think it could take less money than you would think.
