I picked Pikard but if you are looking for the best captain that gets the chicks its Kirk.

And Janeway wasn't lost. She was moved a great distance from home and fought to get back.

I'm still wondering how the hell Bacula got the part as Archer.

AW come on, you can't be serious. James T. Kirk was a starship captain.

Compared to him, Jean Luke Pikerd was a little old lady who hit the bad guys with his purse.

Kirk was charming, but Picard is probably the best captain in sci-fi history, I mean...Come on.

Don't you remember "Yesterday's Enterprise" at the end, battling two klingon cruisers and as the rest of the bridge crew fall Picard vaults over the console and goes out firing as the ship burns around him.

or his history with the Stargazer when he came up with "the picard manuver" against the ferengi ship and appeared in two places at once to destroy them while his ship burned around him

come to think of it, his ships ends up burning around him a lot ... oh well

Anyway Picard has shown he is not one to avoid a firefight but he also is suave enough to smile and wish you a good day while he blows your ship out from under you.

Sure, Picard had his moments...But Kirk was the definition of what a star ship captain is all about. There can be no debate here, by design when TNG was developed, the qualities of Kirk, Spock, and McCoy were spread around into more characters.

Picard + Riker = Kirk(almost).

When the two finally meet in the movie Generations, we saw who the dominate personality was...Kirk was in charge the whole way, with Picard following him around like a lap-dog puppy, "come back with me, please, please, please". Even Picard recognized the greatness of this man, and stood in awe of his accomplishments, his command ability, and his legend.

In TNG and other sequels, whenever the name Kirk is mentioned or the old Enterprise is referred to, you see the characters expressions change or react as though the name Washington, Lincoln, or Jefferson had been mentioned. For example; check Riker's expression in "Relics" when Scotty mentions the name Jim Kirk, or in DSN how desperately Sisko wants to meet the legend Kirk in, "Trials and Tribbelations".

You mentioned the Picard Maneuver, but who knows how many Kirk Maneuvers, or Kirk Strategies there were to be studied at the Academy when Picard attended.

The man cut a wide swath through history.

Kirk and Picard are two different leaders for two very distinct ages.

In a military sense, Kirk is all Tactics, while Picard seems to be broad, sweeping Strategies.

On the ground, when you're in deep crap, I'd take Kirk hands down. If it was planning some major fleet movement or diplomatic suaree', Picard for certain.

[Extending that analysis a bit further, Janeway was the leader of the "Lost Legion," Sisko was a base-commander in Indian country, and Archer was supposed to be a pioneering scout.]

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

The fact that so many people today feel that Picard was the better captain is just a credit to the superb writing on TNG and the outstanding acting ability of Patrick Stewart.

I can't fault you about Patrick Stewart's stellar role in STNG. Frequently superb.

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

And another thing, Kirk had a much cooler middle name; Tiberius. I mean, what kind of a name is -Luc?

Keep in mind that the nominal communications times were supposed to be different between the two series,

In Kirk's time, a ship was hours from Star Fleet most of the time - this was less the case for Picard. This has a big impact on the nature of the command. In Picard's case, he must handle the politics differently than Kirk.

A number of books deal with this difference. I found "Ship of the Line" being a fascinating look into Kirk vs. Picard in terms of command methods.

Wayne

"1) Give no quarter; 2) Take no prisoners; 3) Sink everything." Admiral Jackie Fisher

My opinion is that both characters where products of their time.

Kirk was the Cold War America. During the series the Federations was in almost full war with the Romulens and Klingons. The Enterprise was a Exploration/Skirmish craft ran under strict military rules. If Kirk saw an obstacle to victory he knocked it down. He frequently defied the authority of others because he felt it was right, and 60% of the time he was absolutely right, and 40% of the time innocent aliens or the legendary red shirt died. Star Trek was a Western in Space

Picard is post Cold War America. In his time the Neutral Zone was mostly silent, and the Federation was at piece (mostly). The Enterprise was a family cruise ship with kids and a Super TV. The vast majority of the time Picard did exactly what his superiors told him to do. He was as America saw itself as, the Police of the world. Star Trek was space drama.

Picard was a good practical captain of an Established Federation, ST history will forget him. Kirk was one of the men that finished the establishment of the Federation, he was there Teddy Roosevelt. There is really no comparison.
Yeah, I got a kick out the "Final Battle" video too. But here is a clearer version of it;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpDhIr7i5Go

I must admit, I don't think the old Enterprise could defeat the Enterprise D that easily. It would be too much like a WWI vessel going against a modern day Aegis Class Cruiser.

But again, Captain James T. Kirk would find a way to win through sheer will alone if necessary, the man does not like to lose. He would have some sort of Corbomite Maneuver up his sleeve to trick Picard into surrendering.

After all, Picard will surrender at the drop of a hat.

Scotty and Spock would figure out how to beam him through the E-D's shields. He'd seduce one of the command staff and get the ship's security code from her. He'd double-karate-chop whoever was on watch in the Transporter Room, beam back to the ship and get the Enterprise-D's shields down faster than a skirt on a prom date. Then, it's a couple of torps in the face and a phaser up the chute for Picard. Kirk's preferred manner of attack, of course.
I put on my robe and wizard hat...

I think there are quite a few galactic lassies who wouldn't mind Kirk's space boots under their metallic suspension bunks....
The attractiveness of Picard compared to Kirk is like King Arthur compared to Sir Lancelot.....

Why aren't Janeway and Sisko on the list for the poll?

Janeway's my fav -- I'd follow her into the heart of Borg space any day of the week.
Just tell the truth and let the chips fall...

Well Q sure liked her, but wasn't he "above" those base human sexual feelings... another thread for another time.
If I have a taste for some ham, with lots of cheese, I will vote Kirk ( I do love him) But if it came down to who would lead my starship, gotta go Picard. As long as someone killed off Riker and made Data #1.
