This sounds like a conspiracy/ hoax/ phenomena post, but it isn't.

http://cosmiclog.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2007/12/04/495870.aspx

I am speechless. Therefore I'll desist.

-pyoko the duck

It is by will alone I set my mind in motion.

Bottom line: the lunar photos they published show signs of digital manipulation, but IMO not malicious fraud.

That there are differences is easy enough to determine: you simply use a previous lunar image of the same area (ex: the 1994 Clementine pics) as a mask over the Chinese image in a photo editor (Photoshop, PhotoImpact, Paint Shop Pro etc.) The changes jump out like a kangaroo on crack.

Was it intentional? Possibly not. One 'new crater' and other changes shown in the Chinese images are likely an artifact of software that joins multiple image tiles into one image. There are also a difference in the lighting angle from Clementines images.

Ms. Lakdawala has given a very creditable reply.

These things do happen when images are meshed together ( see Google Earth which has several of such instances ) but then a couple of questions crop up:

1. There should have been some more repeatations in the image ... there seems to be none.. I tried to find seams in various directions but could not succeed.

2. The person who matches the images knows thoroughly well that there is some repeatation.. then why did the Chinese specialists say that a new crater has been found?

1. Without having access to the original tiles finding most seams would be difficult. I have some seaming software that leaves very little evidence, so....

2. Because some politician or bureaucrat decided a 'new discovery' would make for impressive internal headlines in spite of what the imaging scientist knew or didn't know.
