I was reading an article a while ago, and it had mentioned something similar to this. There are some really intersting facts about this theory. I am sure it will be just another Y2K scare though.

"On the winter solstice in 2012, the sun will be aligned with the center of the Milky Way for the first time in about 26,000 years. This means that whatever energy typically streams to Earth from the center of the Milky Way will indeed be disrupted on 12/21/12 at 11:11 p.m. Universal Time."

Is something like that even possible or accurate? If so what effects might this have on the earth?
Welcome to SDC. This assertion has been thoroughly addressed in a recent thread...I'll try and find it. Meanwhile, vogon, I need the dead horse animation.

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Monsters. The Y2K 'scare' at least was grounded with some facts. It was a legitimate bug, though slightly over-hyped and greatly over-exaggerated.

Predicting an apocalypse through cosmic alignments is pure rubbish. Unless, of course, you can predict a gamma ray burst

"If something's hard to do, then it's not worth doing." - Homer Simpson

Well, it will put the end to a long time myth. If the world ends by then, it will happen because of the honey bees disappearing.

Wikipedia has an article on this marvelous and indeed apocalyptic year. Even a summary of some creative apocalyptic predictions. The God of love (or was it lust?) is passing by too.

As an apocalyptical expert I would say that this event: "February 5 — Super Bowl XLVI will be played." Is something that we should seriously worry about.

You got to give some credit to the mayans. They sure did their math homework. The predictions are really really, impressively exact but their interpretation of them is just a matter of how they explained the world around them, just like any othe myth. Their believe was that when the path of the sun aligned with the galaxy's equator is a path to the underworld following a path through the milky way according to their Sacred Tree myths and other similar ones.

Myths and legends are pretty interesting, it shows what human creativity is capable of. To the mayan culture, that date is a pretty big deal, for us it would probably be just one more day but we shouldn't dismiss it as a work of challeneged minds with nothing better to do. If anything, they did what every culture does, explain the world and try to find its mysteries, even if takes a lot of work (like it most certainly did for them). Our version of the Sacred Tree myth is science, who knows if a future civilization won't be laughing or be wondered at us when learning that we feared the sun exploding or cooling or that we predicted many asteroid trajectories and meteorites falling to the Earth always in fear and bewilderment of what awaits us out there.

By the way, did the Mayan's have the prior benefit of any accurate predictions regarding their own decimation ??

TPTB went to Dallas and all I got was Plucked !!

So many people, so few recipes !!

Let's clean up this stinkhole !!

pardon me, i'm new and was just trying to ask an astronmer a question and i was forced to join something in order to ask, so now i'm asking: first, may i premise with the thought that when the 13th baktun 'just happens' to end with a prediction of the end of the world by fire, due to heaven crashing down on earth - that might be considered an accurate countdown

....following that theory, consider that the egyptians reported a heavenly benu bird, that burned up and rose from it's own ashes every 500 years...and 500 years after that, the phoenicians said the same thing about the phoenix...and 500 years after that, there is a report of the star of david...and 500 years after that, the morning star of lord buddha (he sat under a stationary viewing point, and said he wouldn't get up until he realized his enlightenment - that very night, he saw the morning star - thurman book on buddhism says he was forced to take action at that time, which buddhas rarely do)...500 years after that was the star of bethlehem, and the calendar was adjusted to the rock....and the bible ends with jesus calling himself the bright and morning star and promising to return...500 years after that, the thunderbird...500 years after that quetzlcoatl...500 years after that was quetzlcoatl again, and in europe albrect durer engraved melencolia i and the rock is outside the window...498 years after that is december 21 2012.......

i tried to see if the greeks had rumors of the rock, and there was one enigmatic account of a heavenly rock the size of the pelopenesus, but nothing concrete....perhaps they hid the truth for a reason...wouldn't want anarchy, after all!

anyway, if this site doesn't notify my email with a link to the thread, i may never learn my answer, so please one of you nice young people, please let me know if i'm wrong and your proof - i'm at justincase14 @ hotmail.com

here's a peom about the war in heaven, and please feel free to
What if funny about all these claims - the ones that try to sound scientific about their theories of something happening - is that they sound logical until the "buzz word" or phrase. In this case, it is the "energy" that will somehow "influence" us. But as to what this nonesence actually means is any ones' guess (it doesn't mean anything, because it is a 'leap of faith'.

It is the same with any new age stuff.

It is by will alone I set my mind in motion.

I like terms like "Energy circles" or one from RHC, "Hyperdimensional physics". Terms that seem to be designed to make it appear the people using them are somehow in the know about mysterious workings...hmmm, maybe "Mysterious workings" should be incorporated into apocalyptic prediction scenarios.

My borrowed quote for the time being:

There are three kinds of people in life.
