Recording of the new Dr Who series has begun in Cardiff, Wales. The Doctor Who New Series News Page has details, including set reports (carefully hidden behind "spoiler" buttons, though so far the spoilers seem pretty minimal). Nice pictures of extras in military uniforms, however. Might UNIT play a role in the first episode? One of the spoilers does suggest that the Doctor is regenerating at the very beginning of the story, but this isn't much of a surprise, as they do have to explain why he looks like Chris Eccleston now. Also, it appears that the BBC has elected to use DV as their medium.

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

A few relatively benign details from Outpost Gallifrey....

* What's filming in Cardiff is apparently Episode Four. (And they're now using the word "episode" to be synonymous with "story", so this is definintely not what the world will first see of the new series.)

* Autons are being filmed.

* There is now a link with the old series -- special effects wizard Mike Tucker, who did SFX for the last few years of the original series.

* A new character name has been revealed; the companion, Rose Tyler, has a boyfriend named Mickey who is apparently an ethnic minority of some kind and has a substantial role in the new series. (This was mentioned in the BBC's charter, where they were documenting how they were satisfying requirements for giving enough jobs to minorities, but it wasn't enough detail to know much about the character or even know who's been cast in the role -- assuming it's been cast at all yet.)

* Award-winning special effects house "The Mill" has been hired for the series. Their most recent work was digital work for "Gladiator".

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

I wouldn't hold your breath as I think the VCRs over here only record what they are given, so if it is a pal input you get a pal tape. They only play NTSC. Sorry.

Looks like i was wrong .....

Daleks back to ex-ter-min-ate
By Jonathan Este
August 6, 2004

DR WHO's scariest enemy, the Daleks, will be back to terrorise a new generation of children following the settlement of a legal dispute that had threatened to exterminate the mechanised monsters.

Last month the BBC, which is about to start filming a new Dr Who series with Christopher Eccleston in the time-lord title role, announced it would be unable to use the Daleks after negotiations broke down with the estate of their creator Terry Nation.

Representatives of the science-fiction writer, who died in 1997, accused the BBC of ruining the Daleks brand. The BBC said Nation's estate was demanding an unreasonable level of editorial control.

The dispute threatened to blight the second childhoods of millions whose first childhoods were spent watching in delighted horror from behind sofas as the Daleks chased various incarnations of Dr Who around the galaxy.

"Dr Who without the Daleks would be like Morecambe without Wise or Wimbledon without strawberries," declared Antony Wainer of the Dr Who Appreciation Society.

Predictably, it was London tabloid the Sun that last month took the campaign to save the Daleks the furthest: to the streets of Manhattan, where harried New Yorkers were clearly bemused at being accosted by the inter-galactic baddies, spraying gas from their stun guns and chanting: "Ex-ter-min-ate."

Yesterday, BBC drama series chief Mal Young announced the dispute had been resolved and the new 13-part series would include Daleks.

"As well as coming face-to-face with a number of new and exciting monsters, it's good news that the Doctor will also do battle with his arch-enemy, the Daleks, in a series which promises to surprise and entertain a new generation," he said.

A spokesman for Nation's estate said: "We are looking forward to working closely with the production team

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Wanna see this site looking like the old SDC uplink?

Go here to see how: SDC Eye saver

A relatively new rumor (and I don't think this is too much of a spoiler, though Outpost Gallifrey decided to put spoiler tags on it) reveals that casting has completed on one of the villains who will show up during the season -- the Master!

Actually, there are at least two people playing the villanous renegade Time Lord so far. It appears that they are maintaining continuity with the Fox Dr Who movie not only in that the new Doctor is officially number nine, but also in that the Master does not have a body of his own and has to take over other people.

Glen Williams and David Jason have both been cast as people taken over by the Master. I don't know anything about either actor, but this is an interesting bit of news.

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

Interesting to hear he's a comic actor. Then again, sometimes comic actors can do well as melodramatic villains.

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

They've got a famous cameo slated for an upcoming historical episode. The venerable Simon Callow has been signed to play Charles Dickens in an episode set in Victorian England. He was initially very worried when he was sent the script, because he's a huge Dickens fan and most efforts to bring him to the screen are awful. But when he read the script, he was thrilled that the scriptwriter (Mark Gatiss, who's written a number of Dr Who novels) had gotten it right.

In other news, it appears that there are actually two Dalek stories planned for the new season. One will feature just a single Dalek, while the other will feature the usual invading armies of the tinpot terrors.

And I'm not sure if I've mentioned this earlier or not, but after forty years, they've finally decided to ditch the "Edwardian fop" look. The Doctor will have more modern apparel.

There are rumors that the Sci-Fi Channel may be interested in the US broadcast rights, but the Sci-Fi Channel has denied that any deal has been signed. No deal with any American broadcaster is expected until later this year or possibly early next year.

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"
