I must say I have been deeply disapointed in the turn of the more recent episodes of the new series. One of the good rules of the original was "No panky panky in the TARDIS", that is being violated to the diminshment of the concept and the story I also deeply loathe the character of Captain Jack, who is both superfluous and unnecessary.

Jon

Jon

Whether we become a multi-planet species with unlimited horizons, or are forever confined to Earth will be decided in the twenty-first century amid the vast plains, rugged canyons and lofty mountains of Mars Arthur Clarke

But there isn't any hanky panky. In my book, a friendly foxtrot isn't exactly "hanky panky". (Note: if you haven't seen the final episode, be warned that there is kissing. But two of the kisses are "goodbye kisses" and are clearly meant as friendly kisses; the other is a "kiss of life". Furthermore, neither occur in the TARDIS.)

BTW, if you're upset that the companions are obviously attracted to one another, this is not the first time. The first pair of companions to be romantically attracted to one another were....Ian and Barbara, two of the original companions. It was even implied that they got married after leaving the TARDIS.

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

Perhaps you are right, although I did preface my earlier comments in comparing the Dr with huge budget American productions. I will also concede it has been many a year since I watched one of the old classic Who series, so maybe your observation is true on my rose-coloured specs!

The Dalek story has played here now. A little stronger overall, and nice to see one of the old foe (if ONLY one!). I'm still not convinced by Eccleston's portrayal of the Doctor, it's a bit too "up yours" for my liking, so I'm not unhappy he's moving on. I guess I am just showing my age, I'm sure his brash style probably appeals to the kids of today. I do miss the half hour installments too. The cliffhanger finishes to each episode was a big part of the charm of the old seasons as I remember them.

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!

I'm looking forward to David Tennant; unlike Eccleston, he's one of those people who grew up on a steady diet of Who, so he knows what he's working with and is more emotionally invested in the character. (Eccleston did invest himself in the character; he is a consummate professional, after all. But I think for him this was really just another gig.)

I miss the cliffhangers too. Those were fun. There are a few two-parters, so at least you'll get a few cliffhangers. The one at the end of "The Empty Child" is dang good. I was literally on the edge of my seat there!

BTW, I don't think I'm blowing the end of the season too much by saying that you WILL see more Daleks.

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

A new announcement!

Confirming months of rumors and speculation, the BBC has announced that K9 will appear alongside Elisabeth Sladen in the third episode of the new season. John Leeson has been signed to voice the robotic pooch once again, so we won't have to suffer through another moronic explanation of "robotic laryngitis" to explain a change in voice actors. Elizabeth Sladen has offered her insight into the new script, calling it a "truthful progression of Sarah". Leeson merely said that he's excited to be back doing K9 again, saying that a little gathered rust is no objection. (An image distributed with the press release did show K9 looking a bit more weathered; presumably the props department has tried to show the passage of thirty years.)

The monster for their episode will be the Krillitanes, and Mickey will appear in it as well. The story will revolve around mysterious events at a schoolhouse, whose headmaster will be portrayed by Anthony Head (some may know him as Rupert Giles from Buffy: the Vampire Slayer).

Here's the BBC press release: BBC - Doctor Who - K9 Returns

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

A new batch of rumors and reports!

Zoe Wannamaker is returning to the series, and it has now been confirmed that this is indeed to reprise her role as Cassandra, the heavily-surgically-modified "last pure human" from "The End of the World" (episode 2 of the first season). Production crew have said that this time she will actually get into the studio during filming to read her lines for the other actors to react to (although of course she won't actually be appearing, as her character is basically a special effect). The episode in question is rumored to be titled "New Earth" and will be the first episode of the season (not counting the Christmas special).

Anthony Stewart Head, known to many genre fans as Rupert Giles on "Buffy: the Vampire Slayer", will be appearing in the third episode as a school's headmaster. Contrary to many rumors, he will NOT be portraying The Master. Just a regular headmaster, by the sounds of it. That episode will be titled "School Reunion".

As previously reported, "School Reunion" will also feature Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith and John Leeson as the voice of K9. But there may have been a very big spoiler revealed in the press! Use great caution when reading this spoiler:
SPOILERSPACE (highlight the blank area to see it)

Reportedly, K9 will take a serious beating in this episode. In fact, he may actually be destroyed! But the production team swears they do not want to get rid of K9, and that he will be repaired as good as new and mysteriously delivered to a weeping Sarah moments after the TARDIS departs.

END SPOILERSPACE

The Christmas Special, set on present-day Earth, will feature a number of familiar faces from the first season. These will include Jackie Tyler (Rose's mother), Mickey (Rose's long-suffering boyfriend), and Harriet Jones, the low-ranking MP who appeared in "Aliens of London/World War III" and emerged from the rubble of 10

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

Lucky you, and luckier to your friend! You know you've got some really good friends when they drop a TARDIS on your lawn. I presume you're from somewhere near there as well? Have you been able to see any filming?

In semi-related news, my daughter seems to have become a Whovian, and she's only 2. Last weekend, she surprised the heck out of me by piping up during the ending credits for "The Sensorites" with "Bye-bye, Doctor Who!" She pronounces it "jah'juh who", or sometimes "jahjahjoh who". It's hilarious. Yesterday she asked to watch "The Invasion of the Dinosaurs" with Jon Pertwee. Fortunately, she is much too young to care that the dinosaurs are really phenomenally bad special effects.

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

More news!

Pauline Collins, who appeared in the serial "The Faceless Ones" and almost became a companion almost 40 years ago, has been signed on for her second Doctor Who appearance. She will play Queen Victoria in Season Two of the new series. It is speculated that she will appear in the second episode of the actual season (so, not counting "The Christmas Invasion"), called "Tooth and Claw". Rumor now holds that "Tooth and Claw" will be set in Scotland, although it remains to be seen whether it will actually be filmed there. (There have been three Doctor Who stories set at least partly in Scotland so far, if my memory is correct: "The Highlanders", "Terror of the Zygons", and bits of "Timelash". All were filmed in the south of England, near London, because that kept costs down.)

Filming for the new series was spotted not too terribly far from where parts of "The Green Death" (an extremely popular Third Doctor serial) were filmed. Horses and a carriage were spotted. So was the TARDIS prop. It might be the distant future on another world, and it might involve werewolves. A few overheard lines are interesting, but I'll give them spoilerspace:
SPOILERSPACE (highlight the blank area to see it)

One fan reported hearing "This is the year five billion and twenty-five, and it's the galaxy..." There was a lot of wind, so he wasn't able to hear more than that.

Another fan reported hearing an exchange between armed soldiers with Scottish accents and the Doctor, where the Doctor gives a rather surprising pseudonym:
Soldier: Who are you? And who is that half-naked strumpet?
Doctor: I am Doctor Jamie McCrimmon. I studied under Doctor Bell. (The Doctor shows him his psychic paper)

Then later, this exchnage with Queen Victoria:
Queen Victoria: I see, Doctor. But you failed to mention that it says that you are to be my protector.
The Doctor: {unintelligible}
Queen Vic: Very well, Doc

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

One other interesting tidbit: apparently David Tennant (the Tenth Doctor) is in the upcoming film "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" due out this Christmas. He's playing the role of Barty Crouch, Junior.

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

A good friend of mine in Yorkshire just sent me some juicy news from a newspaper article this morning. There are some spoilers, but the one non-spoiler rumor ist hat the the last two episodes will be a two-parter called "Army of Ghosts". I do not know how reliable the following spoilers are, but here we go:

SPOILERSPACE (highlight the blank area to see it)

The episode with the return of the Cybermen may be set in an alternate Earth, possibly one where they have successfully invaded and conquered the planet. (Whovians will remember that in the very first Cyberman serial, "The Tenth Planet", they attempted to steal Earth to become their new homeworld, as their original homeworld of Mondas was dying. They intended to convert the human population into more Cybermen, as this is the only way their species can grow. There were several subsequent attempts, most notably the Patrick Troughton serial "The Invasion", and in "Attack of the Cybermen", they finally gave up and decided to destroy Earth to change history such that Mondas would survive its encounter with Earth.)

The climactic two-parter, "Army of Ghosts", will have the Doctor caught in a war between the Cyberrace and the Daleks. This could be interesting, especially as it means they'll have to find another way of resurrecting the Daleks. Or does it mean they've jumped the timelines for the bulk of the new season? Or perhaps Rose had more of an affect in "The Parting of the Ways" than anybody realized. It will be very interesting to see.

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

Some very juicy spoilers about the new series.

Episode Five and Six (the Cyberman two-parter)
SPOILERSPACE (highlight the blank area to see it)

Fans observing filming have noticed prop posters advertising "Cybus Corporation", which sounds an awful lot like it may point to the Cybermen. The plot may be reminiscent of "The Invasion", a Patrick Troughton serial where the Cybermen invaded London partly with the assistance of a corporation acting as a front. Another poster was replaced with a greenscreen during filming, suggesting that there is some sort of technology not of this world involved....

The episode definitely features Pete Tyler, Rose's late father. This tends to greatly enhance fan speculation that this two-parter will be set in an alternate reality.

Rose's boyfriend Mickey is definitely in this episode. There has been word (apparently in the Season 1 Box Set commentary) that he'll become a regular companion, joining the TARDIS crew, but it's not clear whether this is "our" reality's Mickey, or the alternate reality's Mickey.

END SPOILERSPACE

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

The official website now has a picture of a Cyberman on it! It's an interesting new look for them. It goes back to older Cyberman looks, and also seems to have sort of a "Metropolis" look to it. The design is good, though on the strength of one picture, it seems to lack menace. If anything, it looks a bit melancholy.

One Percent of Federal Funding For Space: America CAN Afford it!! LEO is a Prison -- It's time for a JAILBREAK!!

Some more hints about the new series!

First, the non-spoiler: the first part of the Cyberman two-parter will be called "Rise of the Cybermen".

{spoiler deleted}

Stephen Fry's episode has, alas, been pushed into Season Three, so we'll all have to wait another year for that. It is not clear why it has been pushed off, and nothing has been announced about the episode to replace it.

Complete list of episodes, with whatever non-spoiler information is available:
Ep 1: New Earth
by Russell T Davies
The Doctor and Rose face a race of evil cat aliens running a nightclub in the far future, but the club conceals a sinister secret. The "*****y trampoline", Cassandra, makes an appearance. This is apparently set after the events of "The End of the World", so apparently she survived.

Ep 2: Tooth and Claw
by Russell T Davies
Set at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, but alas, still apparently filmed largely in Wales; this will be the fourth Doctor Who story set at least partly in Scotland, and they still can't spring for the cost of driving up there! Queen Victoria is threatened by aliens, and the Doctor must save her.

Ep 3: School Reunion
by Toby Whithouse
The long-awaited return of Sarah Jane Smith and K9 to the series! Also features genre actor Anthony Stewart Head as Mr Finch, the school's headmaster. The monsters for this episode are called the Krillitanes.

Ep 4: The Girl in the Fireplace
by Steven Moffat
Set in 18th Century France, at the court of Louis XIV. No details on plot yet.

Ep 5: The Rise of the Cybermen
Ep 6: Untitled
by Tom MacRae
The Doctor and Rose discover the Cybermen on an alternate Earth. Cast list includes Rose's dad, and rumors have him enjoying a certain amount of fame -- enough to appear on posters, anyway.

Ep 7: The Idiot's Lantern
by Mark Gatiss
There's a new alien menace in 1950s London, and it travels on TV b

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

Oh, and there's news on another broadcaster. Middle Eastern satellite broadcaster Showtime Arabia has picked up the new series. They'll start running it on their StyleUK channel starting on December 23. It'll run Fridays and Saturdays, so I expect they'll burn through the season in under two months. They might go into repeats after that, or maybe they're planning this rapid-fire broadcast of Series One to get viewers ready for Series Two!

And still no American broadcaster!

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"
