Possibly the conglomeration of "space junk" may just increase the twinkle of Earth, thus sending an inadvertent "Hello Signal" into the vastness of space. Similarly, "space junk" may form a semi-protective cloud around the planet which could disrupt some Earth orbit crossing bodies. from entering the atmosphere. But the scenario I like is: Descending "space junk" wipes out a large chunk of those chatterbox-internet orbiting satellites to the consternation of stock holders and the frustration of the social media crowd. In reality, Earth and its increasing "space junk" will appear to an extraterrestrial as "a blind date who has poor hygiene".
