Something I've always wondered about and perhaps you know the answer: The classic 1956 movie Forbidden Planet. MGM spent some money on that one, saved the costumes, props, Robby the Robot and even some of the sets. It did alright at the box office and the critics were impressed. Why no sequel? That one begged for a sequel!

A Forbidden Planet remake is scheduled for 2010/2011.

Joel Silver (The Matrix, Logans Run [sounds to follow the novel, not the 1st movie], V for Vendetta and the coming Sherlock Holmes, Wonder Woman and others) is set to produce. J. Michael Straczynski (Babylon 5, The Changeling and many others) is said to be the director and deep into tech prep with AI types, astrophysicists etc.

Yeah...that was a good scene. At 7-8 years old & seeing it up close on a big screen it had me and my friends yelling "oh s**t" and almost wetting our pants

Did you know that Disney's animators did that scene?

UPDATE: GAWD...did I ever miss something in my messages!!!!

IESB and Latino Review, both well connected sources, are reporting that J. I wasn't asking about a re-make. Why didn't they do a follow-on back in the '50s? Like Star Trek there were unlimited stories for them to do.

If you believe Gene Roddenberry in his biography Star Trek was the follow on....even if not by MGM and using different names etc.

Think about it: a high-testosterone captain with a ships physician as a sidekick and an engineer who can cannibalize parts to make anything. I would say that Forbidden Planet is loosely based upon The Tempest, Star Trek owes a lot to Forbidden Planet--as does Lost in Space--but I'd really like to know why they didn't do another movie with that cast say like, two years after the release of the original. That would have been a studio--MGM--decision. Also, decades ago at a Star Trek con a friend of mine in-the-know revealed that the Disney animation in Forbidden Planet was not entirely complete--the ID monster attacking the ship--due to time constraints and budget problems.

A lot of the props including the ship and Robby were reused in The Twilight Zone

"All God does is watch us and kill us when we get boring. We must never, ever be boring" - Chuck Palahniuk.
