That capsule must be strong, it looks fairly intact for a 100 mph impact.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Wanna see this site looking like the old SDC uplink?

Go here to see how: SDC Eye saver

why exactly have they cordoned off a 3 mile radius?

and why are they saying "aircraft proceed with caution"

at least we now know what the MPL site must look like.

It looks broken open.. guess those samples are contaminated now.

Hope there wasn't anything hazardous in there.

From Spaceflightnow:

An overhead view of the impact point shows the capsule half-buried on its side. The craft appears to be badly damaged.

Thats just what i was thinking. It looks like it might have cracked open. I guess the chutes failed because of the end over end spinning motion.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Wanna see this site looking like the old SDC uplink?

Go here to see how: SDC Eye saver

what a complete Major Security Breach? I saw a film about this once, capsule hit the ground, people started dying.... what a complete waste of time money.

I just hope there was no biological or protein fragments in or on that craft.

Hmm. Isn't Stardust supposed to return its sample just like this?

Perhaps it contained horrible, flesh-eating mutant microbes from the sun!!!

Oh, god! We're all going to die!

It's a good suspense flick, but bear in mind that things have been hitting Earth from space for a very long time with no ill effects (well, apart from their kinetic energy).

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

NASA has posted an image of the capsule on the ground:

Genesis on the ground

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

If it was so important they should have fitted it with a backup system ie. backup parachute or small retro-rockets.
yep very good Calli ! couldnt remember the name of it, still extremely surprised that they were not wearing Hazmat suits when they went to examine it.

what would be the chances that an ET life form could have been collected? I know the reentry heat would have killed off anything on the surface of the craft but what about inside?

The parachute system was designed by ACME parachutes inc. , apparently. Wile E. Coyote is their spokesman.

HOLY HELL!!! it crashed? NOOOOOOO! I was so looking forward for this.

perhaps the mini-ET's purposely disabled the parachute system... so they could escape the probe and conquer our planet!

Yeah.. I'd mentioned that earlier.

Well, back to the drawing board... maybe we'll be lucky and some samples will be intact. If not, time to review what happened... what went wrong at the last minute... and look to fixing it for the next one.

The collectors are not aerogel so they might have survived intact. I hope it works out. What a bummer

All might not be lost, I wonder how insulated were samples ? Not very much I think ...

wouldn't they at least be in something as sturdy as the black box on an airplane?

you would think.

this crash looks far less traumatic.

It seems I tempted fate. I once said in an other topic that I was afraid what would happen if it crashed. Specifically what would happen if the chute failed to deploy.

Edit:added last part

Stardust's return capsule is parachute assisted, but I have no idea about midair capture.

ALL THESE WORLDS ARE YOURS
EXCEPT UTAH
ATTEMPT NO LANDING THERE
