Hmm. Destination Moon, The War of the Worlds, When Worlds Collide, The Time Machine, to name a few. What are your memories of these movies? Pretty cool, I think! At least they were a lot of fun when I was a kid. I haven't seen them in decades.

I haven't seen those in a while either.

I got a set of classic science fiction movies for my birthday a couple of weeks ago....I think I saw Destination Moon on the list of titles. Maybe I'll get out the popcorn and have a movie night tonight! :)

It was the mid-80s when I got my first VCR and Paramount had just released The War of the Worlds on VHS. Good quality, too. I remember seeing some crappy prints of The Time Machine and When Worlds Collide at Star Trek cons a decade earlier. It was outcry from the fans that forced the studios to pull the original color negatives of those movies, including Forbidden Planet, and clean them up and restore them prior to releasing them on VHS. The first time I saw The War of the Worlds was when it debuted on television in the mid-'60s. The scene where that electronic eye slowly came out of the pit with that throbbing, pulsating sound effect scared the bejeebers out of me! The Time Machine was a wonderful little movie that bore little resemblance to H.G. Wells' novel. I loved Alan Young--about to start Mister Ed--with that Scottish brogue, and of course Rod Taylor was so damned handsome. He never had the career that he should have. Pity.

"Destination Moon" is not just my favourite George Pal film, it is one of my favourite movies, period. It was eerily prescient of the future to come and many people involved in space policy today -- and President Obama -- should watch it. It also predicted the Private/Alt-Space movement of today.

I like "The Time Machine" and "The 7 Faces Of Doctor Lao" very much and I think his "Tom Thumb" starring Russ Tamblyn and Alan Young, was/is a wonderful family film! I actually had the pleasure of seeing it on the big screen back in the 1970s.

I'm ashamed to say I've never seen Destination Moon.....or several of the non-science fiction films. 7 Faces of Dr. Lao was a delight, and has become something of a cult classic. Of course, War of the Worlds was his real magnum opus, and had the biggest impact on science fiction film and television of that era. They all hold up pretty well, especially WOTW. It scared the crap out of me when I first saw it as a tyke. Hard to believe it was made in 1953, the special effects were so good!

Nice to hear from you, Eddie! Yeah, I forgot about 7 Faces of Dr. Lao. I haven't seen that one in a century! I think all who post here should get together for a George Pal Film Festival. At your place!

If you have cable TV and access to Turner Classic Movies, several of George Pal's movies will be on this month. War of the Worlds, his best film, will be on this coming Friday evening, followed by The Time Machine. 7 Faces of Dr. Lao, my second-most favorite, will be broadcast on September 14th, as well as Tom Thumb, if I'm not mistaken.

As the only real, genuine, bonafide, honest-to-God scientist out here, Mario, I concur! ;)

I have seen War of the Worlds and The Time Machine when I was 5-6 years old on this cool sci-fi TV show they used to air over here.
These movies left strong impression on me so I still (sort off) recall them.
I especially loved the time travel sequences in The Time Machine.
Somebody put entire movie (in parts) on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcziOmxNuus

You could probably replicate the time travel sequences from The Time Machine on your home computer. Back then it was time-consuming, manual labor work that took a very, very long time to get right. Today we take really kewel visual effects for granted, but not so long ago it was one of the reasons we plunked our money down at the box office, because we knew what a challenge it was for "The Movies" to awe us visually. Today I see tv commercials with better visual effects than 2001 or Close Encounters or the first Superman movie.

I remember being about 10 years old and visiting my grandma. She would let me watch TCM all day! It was great ! I'd have to say my favorite George Pal movie is "Atlantis the lost continent", The Time Machine is definitely a close second. Technology has changed soooo much and I love the effects in modern movies but there really is something to be said for the creativity of that time.

Cheers

Welcome, Lex. I suspect that your grandma is my age! My friend CrazyEddie has posted here and he seems to be far more up on George Pal movies than I am. If you have specific questions you might want to consult him. Quite a contrast between visual effects then and now, of course!
