Hello everyone. Im currently working on building an independent spaceship for a personal launch mission set for 2008. I need help with my design because Im trying to get to Mars. It has so far gone great except for the fact that parts are very very expensive. I need help with creating an engine using cheap junkyard material. Any suggestions?

Please hurry because I must complete this project by May 2008. I have had offers from NASA after they found out details on my plan. Therefore I will not reveal any design details out of fear that NASA will steal it from me. Its a sad world when scientific superpowers such as NASA want to crush independent projects for the sake of their vanity.

Try making the main capsule out of paper machey. Light weight and very cheap.

Should i start saving up newspapers?

You wanna talk some jive? I'll talk some jive. I'll talk some jive like you've never heard!

If your serious and assuming you havn't done so already, invest your money in a PC, 3D graphics software, and design your craft in the computer first. This will allow you to develop and debug the physical aspects of your design.

I can tell you one thing, don't tie yourself to a date. What is the significance of May 2008?

Cheap junkyard parts? I don't know of too many junkyards that have cheap rocket parts lying around. What sort of education and experience do you have in developing rocket engines? What type of propulsion? Is this to be an unmanned or manned craft? What type of LV are you planning on?

Tulip:
Its a sad world when scientific superpowers such as NASA want to crush independent projects for the sake of their vanity.

Me:
I'm not convinced NASA is out to do this but erring on the side of safety, do what Rutan did. maintain a tight lip, file patents, etc until the project can be demonstrated to the press and the world.

My borrowed quote for the time being:

There are three kinds of people in life. Could you uplink your grant application to NASA?

We can provide help in revising it and perhaps get your funding restored.

TPTB went to Dallas and all I got was Plucked !!

So many people, so few recipes !!

Let's clean up this stinkhole !!

This thread was originally in Missions and Launches, where it was off-topic, so I moved it here.

I PM'ed Tulip that I had moved it, but she may still be unaware.

She is probably also unaware of the fact that there are a number of us who understand something of how the government procurement process works.

Wayne

"1) Give no quarter; 2) Take no prisoners; 3) Sink everything." Admiral Jackie Fisher

How much do you have to spend? Is this just a paper project? Are you wanting to build a Mars direct type mission? More info is needed before any real ideas can start bouncing around.

.

Never roll in the mud with a pig. I just checked with some people at NASA HQ and apparently there are many proposals of this type clog up the open proposal system and create a substantial burden on the job of reviewing and funding proposals that are at least based on scientific principals. I could use some funding for my project. It involves a machine that will generate usable power from the energy wasted on ideas like this one.
"Time exists so that everything doesn't happen at once" Albert Einstein

Walmart sells inexpensive spaceship parts. I prefer to buy American products and not cheap Chinese imports but at $2.39 a square foot it's hard to get into space for any cheaper.

Nothing I've bought at Wal*Mart ever lasts, it self destructs.

My wife bought some kitchen towels, when she put them through the washer they came out as a pile of strings. If it comes from Wal*Mart chances are pretty good it came from China anyway. Even the American flags they sell come from China.

Fusion? Bah! Give me a Bad Idea Generator. Endless fuel.......

Yeah, no pesky proton decay. That's my major gripe with fusion, pretty soon (assuming the viewpoint of a bipolar cosmologist) you're going to run out of stuff to fuse.

Alternatively, you could subcontract Iran to make them for you, I heard they just figured out the process.

Pfft. Any half competent physics major can build you a teller-ulam design given the raw materials.

As Iran is finding out, the tricky part is the chemistry for seperating the fuel, particularly if you're being bombed by Israel. I'd look to russian navalyards, theres tonnes of HEU just sitting round in old mothballed subs ready for the taking.
