One of the latest from Oppy (L3, L5 & L6 filters):

-------------------------------------------------------------------

"I hold it that a little rebellion now and then is a good thing, and as necessary in the political world as storms in the physical. There is an article by Gil Levin on the Spherix website (pointed out in the Life on Mars thread in this forum, thanks AB!) regarding "Color Calibration of Spirit and Opportunity Rover Images." The odd appearance of the color calibration chart in the NASA panoramic images is examined, and two incompatibilities with the calibration images are noted.

In another paper on the Spherix site, "Color Calibration of Martian Images", it is stated: "On some future date, a spacecraft may land on Mars carrying its own calibration light source of known spectral properties. Until this occurs, the illumination of Martian color calibration charts will continue to be an issue." In the first paper, Gil also makes this assertion that I found interesting: "Rather than search endlessly for the unknown illumination of the surface, the color calibration charts should be used to render the Martian scenery as it would appear on Earth. Martian objects would be more easily understood if they were illuminated by lighting conditions with which we are all familiar."

I did find the appearance of the color chart in the panorama images to be very strange, but my knowledge in this area is tenuous (ignore me if I'm not making sense ) Would any of you image processing pros be able to use the given data to correct for the two calibration issues noted, and produce such "Earth illuminated" images?

" "Rather than search endlessly for the unknown illumination of the surface,
the color calibration charts should be used to render the Martian scenery as it would appear
on Earth. Martian objects would be more easily understood if they were illuminated by
lighting conditions with which we are all familiar."

I use Adobe Photoshop CS to produce the images I posted here. I try to adjust the images to Earth
lighting in most my images, there is a lot of controversy on what true color is. I can even take a
L2, L4, L6 filter image and refine it to get a close approximation to the actual by comparing
what the rover looked like on Earth and what it should look like on Mars similar to Earths if part
of it is in the image. I later use that technique to do the same filters without the rover in the image.
I get close to what the rover image would look like almost every time without a reference
point - rover in the image. Keep in mind that Mars gets much less solar radiation than Earth does.

I do a lot more stuff to it, like I will darken the filtered image and add contrast most of the time
before I try to adjust the Hue and saturation point, some people call this cheating but you
have to adjust the brightness of the image first most of the time because the filters are at there
maximum for each RGB setting. If you don’t then you get the dull looking image that JPL produces.
By darkening and adding contrast it brings out more of the shadows on Mars and sharpens the
image more. It also helps define the edges. I need to do this in different ways depending on the
filters used and the brightness of the image. Sometimes you have to brighten the image before
you add contrast because of the time of day the image is taken at.

For comparison L4 filter is more like the color orange then the green filter normally use L5 filter.
In most cases i
Ron Bennett

Here is some 1 filter colorized images.

Not too many 3 filtered images have come out from either site in the last several weeks, you
need three filters to accurately match the color of the terrain and to turn the image from a raw
image into one with less defects if any therefore it helps verify what you are looking at. Spirit
site it is easier to get away with colorizing the image from 1 filter because most of the terrain is
orange to red color anyway. It still sure beats the grayscale raw images JPL releases.

There are a lot of things that are never viewed if we don’t, on occasion, look at the single raw
filtered images.

2N152383223EFFR0M1

Ron Bennett

Some images from Mars Express, ESA. I sharpened the image and added contrast to bring out more
detail so the color may be a little off. In some cases I enlarged the original part of the image up to
4 times. A lot of ESA images I see long root-like objects on the slopes??I have talked about this before,
has anyone ever witnessed this type of effect on Earth before?
Ron Bennett
