I LOVE this picture -- 1N154005002EDNL0M1
(its the one of the martian clouds),

BTW, at the risk of asking two stupid questions. 1) How are clouds on Mars different from earth? and 2) Could hail fall from those clouds?

Animation from Spirit Sol 316 (L3, L5 & L6 filters).

The same scene seen on same Sol, Sun slant slightly skewed.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

"I hold it that a little rebellion now and then is a good thing, and as necessary in the political world as storms in the physical. 1) How are clouds on Mars different from earth? and 2) Could hail fall from those clouds?

I don’t know anyone who fully understands the weather processes on Mars but I would guess
that some clouds in the South Polar regions may be made out of CO2 ice crystals. As far as hail, I
would believe, unless there is a strange process in the Martian atmosphere, hail couldn’t form - hail
requires a process that involves a liquid state. Terrestrially speaking, evaporated water,
(water vapor), may not have enough salts after attaching to dust molecules in the atmosphere,
to change the zero point of water low enough to form a liquid state.

A question I have is how acidic does iron oxide, Martian dust, mixed with water vapor get and can it
form water droplets at a lower zero point temperature in a 6 millibars atmosphere on Mars?

On earth, sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) are the primary causes of acid rain.

Analysis of spectral features due to the atmospheric dust indicates a SiO2 content of 60 ± 10%,
implying that substantial geochemical differentiation has occurred

The particles appear to consist of claylike aggregates stained or cemented with ferric oxide
(Fe2O3); at least some of the stain and cement is probably maghemite (-Fe2O3). The presence of
the phase would imply that Fe2+ ions leached from the bedrock, passing through a state as free Fe2+
ions dissolved in liquid water. These particles could be a freeze-dried precipitate from ground water
poured out on the surface. An alternative is that the magnetic particles are titanomagnetite occurring
in palagonite and inherited directly from a basaltic precursor.

http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/full/278/5344/1768

Ron Bennett

I've been wondering about: in many of the (re) processed images you release are smooth dark
bands of sediments in what appear to be water - worn channels; these sediments appear to be (dare
I say it) wet...... are there, to your knowledge, any images or data available regarding these
apparent deposits

It’s a weird process. A few post ago, Silylene seem to think that it may be caused by some kind of
seepage. I agree that there is some on-going process that causes the darker areas in Endurance
crater to form smooth dark streaks. It could be a visual process from the imagers to bring out more
detail and extract more data out of the image but I agree with Silylene assumption that there is
some chemical or alluvial type process creating these dark streak areas.

Below is an image of one of the areas that appears to have dried up within a short period of time???

Ron Bennett

Good job.

I think some of the most recent L7 images they compiled at the seepage area in endurance must
be for animation. You may want to check out what they were trying to do. They may be looking for some
traces of seepage or alluvial type flow.

I'm going to be out of commission for at least the next several days if not longer, moving to a new location
on planet earth.

Be looking forward to seeing more of your work and the other people who have posted images here.

Ron Bennett

Thanks rlb2.

Which set of L7 images are you referring to? I did one animation and, after staring at it for far too long, saw nothing happening. Of course, I might have done the wrong one.

Hope you have a safe move. If you don't mind my asking, where are you moving to?

-----------------

Here's the latest from Oppy (L2, L5 & L7 filters).

-------------------------------------------------------------------

"I hold it that a little rebellion now and then is a good thing, and as necessary in the political world as storms in the physical. Which set of L7 images are you referring to?

Sub-Frames 289, 288 and before. they took a lot of L7 images in a row, I don't know if they did that by
mistake or for a purpose?

If you don't mind my asking, where are you moving to?

I am moving from the Northwest to Phoenix Arizona. Looking for a little more sun.

I am trying to get back online and may do that before the end of the week.
