Not bad only need a bachelor's degree in engineering, science or mathematics and have three years of relevant professional experience. I don't think I can squeeze it all in by July 1, 2008. Now if they were looking for a Network Admin on the Moon hook me up with that...

William ( deapfreeze ) Hooper

http://deapfreeze-amateur-astronomy.tk/

i think its bogus that you have to have a sheet of paper that says you're smart in a lot of instances.

for just one example. im not bad with fixing a C-130 engine (T-56), but lockheed wouldnt hire me in most cases because i dont have an A&P license.

"i think its bogus that you have to have a sheet of paper that says you're smart in a lot of instances."

But it isn't:
1. It shows that you can finish and accomplish something
2. It provides a first level discriminator for weeding out applicants
3. Most of the jobs that require the degrees are applicable to the some of the tasks of an astronaut
4. The course of study for the degrees is similar to astronaut training.

"

How about network admin on ISS?

I was watching NASA TV while they were chasing down a router problem:

Ground: OK - now type Charlie, Mary, David. Now IP config ...

Sound familiar?

ozspace...i worked on C-130 engines a bit in the navy in the engine shop. im comfortable with them. you dont need an A&P to work on them in the navy. (i worked on several other aircraft types, as well)

however, i worked on C-9's mostly; hyd system, changing a windshield, brakes, other essential components and maintenance. no USN C-9 has ever been lost due to maintenance.

all that, without a degree saying im smart. theres a video out there of a chimp flying an F-14. but not fixing it.

You have your Navy paperwork, don't you? I'm surprised Lockheed or somebody similar wouldn't hire you since your Navy training is a lot better and more documented than most civilian schools. In any event, it shouldn't be too hard to add an A&P with your background.

>own a router problem:
Ground: OK - now type Charlie, Mary, David. Now IP config ...
Sound familiar?

groan. Was the next question "Where's the Return key?"

I wonder if these kinds of computing issues will recede into the background with younger people who have grown up with computers?

J

We need a first generation of pioneers.

Close. The next comment from the guy on the ISS was: do I just hit return or is this one of those devices that needs the "super secret" password?

Turns out that that the super secret password was indeed needed. I thought the ground controller was going to give it to the guy on NASA TV, but the astronaut drifted off camera to retrieve the super secret password.

"Ground: OK - now type Charlie, Mary, David. Now IP config ...

Sound familiar?"

And the fix?? reboot! Few things a good reboot won't take care of. And I don't need a computer engineering degree to know that!
