There's a mistake here. The article states "the velocity of the falling material accelerates downwards". As written that's not quite correct. An acceleration of velocity would be a jerk. Gravity causes an acceleration of an object (position) relative to another body, not an acceleration of velocity over time. The rate of change of velocity over time is constant under gravity. That is to say the velocity is changing at a constant rate, not at an accelerated (increasing) rate. Perhaps better to say the velocity of the falling material changes or increases as it falls, or simply "the falling material accelerates downwards".
