I was talking to my son about magnetics the other day and we got on a subject of using it to accelerate a ship .

With the strong magnetic field Jupiter has would it be possible using electromagnetic fields switching to accelerate a ship that is in orbit around jupiter to beyond escape velocity ? If you use own electromagnetic field to keep you from flying out of orbit while also accelerating in an attempt to achieve more speed for interstellar travel (sending a probe to another star system) .

Propulsion requires the magnetic field of Jupiter plus a strong field produced by the space craft. To reach escape velocity from Jupiter orbit requires a long time with a medium strong magnetic field, or about the strongest field presently possible to leave orbit in a few hours. Perhaps even a magnet star field = million tesla is too weak to make an interstellar trip in less than 10,000 years ship time. I'm guessing so please correct. Neil
