Man Made Meteor Shower possible?

Would it be possible to have a rocket launch large bags of sand and small rocks into space and have them spread out a little bit before they reenter? It would be pretty cool to see pea gravel reentering, since most meteorites are the size of grains of sand and maybe grains of rice.

Sure it would be possible. But what if the rocket malfunctions and releases the cargo into an orbit which doesn't decay anytime soon. You've just created an orbital debris killing field for anything in LEO.<br /><br />Besides, you could just wait 12 days and see all the fireworks you want, for a whole lot less money.
