"The ongoing process of refinements to all elements of the Ares I/Orion vehicle have picked up pace again, following the end of the scheduled stand-down of NASA Constellation design cycle work."

I based the title of the thread on the first sentence of the article. I agree with you, though that the focus is on Orion. Maybe the title should have read...

"More Ares I/Orion Modifications"

All of these mod's may be necessary. I'm not sure I'm qualified to judge these decisions. I just worry that it takes us closer to simply resupplying the ISS, never develping the Ares V and a 21st century moon shot remaining only a vision and not a reality. NASA and Congress and the next President need to keep us on course.

SLJ

In reply to:

"It's good to see that the new J-2X requirements include a "re-start" capability. "

The original J2 had restart capability.

But the previous J-2X requirements did not include a "re-start" requirement. We've been amazed for over a year wondering WHEN is MSFC going to wake up and add that requirement.

No problem S_G.

BTW, were you around during the Saturn days? One of the J-2 engine (the center one) sufferred a bit of POGO near the end of 2nd stage flight (chucking instability?).

The original J-2 has a dedicate LH2 bottle for engine re-start. I guess they were worried that they wouldn't get enough 'head' pressure to spin the engine up, eh?

<Things change.>

Ah, but that's the point. When was the change made?

I claimed the engine changed back when Lockheed won the Orion contract, because of a news article about the contract that mentioned the different engine Lockeed favored.

Your claim was that the news story was false, that there was no engine change and we should trust your 'insider' information instead of publiclly available information.

So now that you finally admit the CEV engine was indeed changed, what is your current claim about when that change was made? This should be interesting...
