The estimated count of 1cm and larger sized objects created by the china anti satellite test has gone up from 35,000 to 150,000.

I think stories of impending doom, for our communications infrastructure, caused by space junk should be hitting main stream media quite soon.

"NASA research by orbital debris experts now peg the number of fragments created by the ASAT shot as far higher than first reported - something like 150,000 or more bits of high-speed shrapnel that are one-centimeter and larger were created."

http://www.livescience.com/blogs/2008/01/11/chunks-of-junk-china-asat-test-plus-one-year/

New Years resolution: Must learn to be more precise.

SG you really do like to jump on those individual words don’t you. You are of course correct tho'. :)

OK so maybe not the GEO synchronous com sats up at 20,000 miles. Just the, roughly, 800 others at lower altitudes.
Hi shuttle_guy,

IYO, how long do you think the debris from that idiotic Chinese test will pose a threat?

Andrew Brown.

"I suddenly noticed an anomaly to the left of Io, just off the rim of that world. No offence taken SG, I have read a lot of your posts and learned a lot from them. It was a tongue in cheek reply.

Please do carry on being precise :)
Thanks shuttle_guy.

I find it hard to beleive that the Chinese were not aware of the potential consequences
of that test.

The Chinese are very intelligent people & the country of China has considerable aerospace
experience these days, so yes it does seem strange, that they did not think it through.

I did think that the results of this test would be very long term, unfortunately.

Andrew Brown.

"I suddenly noticed an anomaly to the left of Io, just off the rim of that world. I second that itsfullofstars.

I too have learned an awful lot from shuttle_guy. I do not often chime in on the
manned spaceflight threads, but I do open & read them very regularly.

There is a lot of very good information & answers contained.

Andrew Brown.

"I suddenly noticed an anomaly to the left of Io, just off the rim of that world. HI Andrew

Maybe certain people were aware of the consequences but as usual politics got in the way and those certain people had to shut up and do as they were told.

Very big important guy looks at the little, but much more intelligent guy, and says: ‘I have a great idea shorty! I want to show the rest of the world how big and cleaver I am! I want to blow up a satellite!!’

Little guys stammers: ‘I don’t think that is a very goo……’

Big guys slaps little guy and says: ‘stop talking and go do it now before I slap you again.’
