New wave of missions to reignite Venus exploration

Isn't this idea of possible microbial life in Venus's atmosphere dated to Carl Sagan's 1980 seminal book and TV course: "Comos"? Given the extreme environmental conditions of Venus and the operation of Evolution, couldn't any atmospheric sample returned to Earth have untoward and inimical consequences for Earth's life forms? One has to wonder if the money couldn't be better spent on finding and exploring a planet(s) more like our Earth in most aspects, or better still improving environmental conditions for extant life forms here on Earth while we still have time?
