First I want to thank everyone here who has taken so much time to answer my questions and provide information. But like Oliver, I want more.

What I want is a resource on optics. Something that covers the basics well. I am understanding some of it better, but still get confused at times. Ideally, I would like a resource that maps the concepts to available hardware, but that isn't as important to me as understanding the basics. I've surfed Amazon.com and nothing stood out.

The Disenfranchised Curmudgeon

http://tonyplank.blogspot.com/

If you want to play with optical design software, you may want to go to:

http://www.sinopt.com/

where you can download a small free version. It can teach almost everything about elementary design. It has a number of visual graphics in displaying an optical system as well as displaying several types of optical analysis of the system. It has a number of canned systems to look at, so you do not have to create from scratch. It will take a little while to learn all it is capable of doing. But for teaching the basics, it is hard to beat this approach, in my view.
