I haven't heard (maybe I missed it) but has a landing target been determined yet and if not, when will one be decided on?

Don't let who you are keep you from becoming who you want to be!

Hi abq_farside,

I think the landing area has been decided, not the actual site.

This is turning into a bit of a headache due to the fact that the MRO HiRISE has shown
one canditate site after another to be dangerously littered with boulders.

If airbag landing like Pathfinder or the MERs, its not so bad, as the cushioned craft would
just bounce off them, till it settled down.

Phoenix being a powered descent, does not have the same level of safety, more can
go wrong.

An area near the so called Green Valley in Scandia Colles seems the most likely site
right now.

Here is a Planetary Society article.

This is similar to the Viking 1 lander site selection anguish.

Initially Ares Vallis was chosed from Mariner 9 imagery. When Viking 1 arrived & the
Viking 1 Orbiter re imaged Ares Vallis, it was found to be potentially dangerous,
so a site to the north west in Chryse Planitia was chosen instead.

The oxymoron was that Mars Pathfinder was targetted & landed at exactly Viking 1's original
proposed site in Ares Vallis

As they say, what goes around, comes around.

Where is Phoenix?

Hopefully this is what will happen.

Andrew Brown.

"I suddenly noticed an anomaly to the left of Io, just off the rim of that world. It was extremely large with respect to the overall size of Io and crescent shaped. November Update.

Landing site still looks to be 68.176N, 233.36E or 68 degrees, 10' 36" North,
233 degrees, 20' 5" East (126 degrees, 39' 55" West).

All is going smoothly. No problems to report.

Andrew Brown.

"I suddenly noticed an anomaly to the left of Io, just off the rim of that world. Exactly when will the MPL land, in terms of the seasonal cycles of Mars?

Obviously the MPL isn't landing during the winter of the north hemisphere of Mars, since the MPL is solar powered. But what Mars season is it when MPL lands? Summer? Fall? And how many hours of daylight are there per one day-cycle when MPL first arrives, since MPL lands pretty far north?

Hi gunsandrockets.

On Mars, the Northern Mid Summer Solstice is on June 24th, only three days after
the equivalent on Earth. Phoenix will be landing @ the end of May, so as a terrestrial
analogue, the same as early June on Earth.

Phoenix will be landing far enough north @ the time to be under the Martian Midnight Sun
(at Local Midnight the Sun will dip to approx 2 degrees above the Northern Horizon).

The Martian Midnight Sun will last approx three months after arrival, then the nights at first
will be very short, but will very quickly lengthen. It is hoped the Pheonix will last till after the
Autumn / Fall Equinox, when the first condensates as water & CO2 frosts start appearing.

Phoenix obviously will not last the Martian Northern Winter, when at the Solstice,
the Sun fails to rise at all coming to 2 degrees below the southern horizon at Noon
(there will be bright twilight, but no direct Sunlight), not to mention the C02 deposits
building up (may be 2 metres deep at the Spring Equinox) & the temperature
dropping to around minus 140 Celsius.

Andrew Brown.

"I suddenly noticed an anomaly to the left of Io, just off the rim of that world. Hi gunsandrockets,

You are more than welcome, I absolutely love this sort of thing.

Here is a Redshift 4 view of the Martian Midnight Sun from the Phoenix site.

Tuesday 24th June 2008, the Martian Northern Summer Solstice.

The Earth, Venus, Mercury, Uranus, Neptune & Jupiter too are circumpolar @ this time.

Out of interest this is the Martian Mid Winter Solstice View @ Midday, with
the Sun clearly still below the southern horizon, from the
Phoenix site.

I wish MeteorWayne, that I get paid the Big Bucks $$$$$$

Andrew Brown.

"I suddenly noticed an anomaly to the left of Io, just off the rim of that world.
