Thanx for the update!

I had heard of this program myself a few months ago, and I am eagerly awaiting it's broadcast. High Def too! How cool is that?

This thread I think more properly belongs in the Science Fiction forum rather than Space Science & Astronomy. If this thread isn't moved you should post your information there anyway.

I was just wondering if anyone has heard much about the coming mini series "Race to Mars" supposed to be on Discovery in the next month or so? It's very hard to find any recent news on it.

"Race to Mars" (2007) (mini)

Director: George Mihalka (Da Vinci's Inquest)

Writers: Garfield Reeves-Stevens; Judith Reeves-Stevens

Synopsis: In the year 2030, the race to be the first to reach the Red Planet is on - and China is leading the way. China has stunned the world by leapfrogging over America's long-term plans and has landed a series of advanced rovers and robotic landers in their quest to make the most important discovery in history - extraterrestrial life on Mars. Once again, America and its partners, including Canada, are thrust into a winner-take-all space race - but the stakes are higher than the race to the Moon nearly seven decades earlier.

The international team accelerates its plans - when China prepares to send its final wave of rovers, this consortium will surge ahead and at last launch a human crew. Six extraordinary individuals from Canada, the United States, Russia, France and Japan are selected for this gruelling two-year mission. These four men and two women must work together as a team, rise above their secret fears and struggle with the sacrifice of leaving friends and family behind. Training and determination will get them only so far, and when this crew sets out on humanity's first expedition to another world, nothing can prepare them for the unexpected danger and staggering wonder of what they will experience.

Cast (largely Canadian):

Antoine Hébert: Lothaire Bluteau (24)

Lucia Alarcon: Claudia Ferri (Highlander TV, Naked Josh)

Jackie Decelles: Pascale Bussières (Le coeur a ses raisons [CDN soap parody])

Rick Erwin: Michael Riley (This Is Wonderland[CDN "Law & Order", without the order])

I am so looking forward this series!

One happy surprise -- nuclear rocket engines! If Canadian movie producers of all people don't even blink at nuclear rockets, maybe the oft voiced fear that nuclear reactors are politically unviable for spaceflight applications is not a valid fear after all.

Sounds awesome! Hopefully it won't take too long to hit our airwaves down under.

I'm a little surprised it's on Discovery though, being fiction and all. Would've thought the Sci-fi channel was more appropriate.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Wanna see this site looking like the old SDC uplink?

Go here to see how: SDC Eye saver

<I'm a little surprised it's on Discovery though, being fiction and all. Would've thought the Sci-fi channel was more appropriate.>

I'm not at all surprised. Race to Mars isn't mindless fiction like Red Planet. The project is intended to be educational as much as entertainment. It's the notion of a spoonful of fiction to make the science go down easier. There is even a companion multi-part pure documentary running in parallel with Race to Mars.

Didn't the Discovery Science channel air a fictional movie about a hypothetical mission to all of the planets a few months ago?

So, again we are defeated. In the year 2030, the race to be the first to reach the Red Planet is on - and China is leading the way...

China is where Russia used to be (when the latter was the USSR)...now Russia just seems to be regarded as a "bit player" in space . Still, at least they don't seem to be the bad guys (for once).

<Didn't the Discovery Science channel air a fictional movie about a hypothetical mission to all of the planets a few months ago?>

You may be thinking of this BBC 2004 production...

Space Odyssey: Voyage to the Planets

I saw it on DVD. It's okay, but perhaps my expectations were too high.

I think Race to Mars is looking a lot better so far.

Yeah, I got the same thing too. Further examination of an SDC article showed that it was only on Discovery Canada.

So, again we are defeated. I can't imagine $20 million dollars spent for something that would only show in Canada. This article suggests wide broadcast...

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12743183/

... perhaps the showtimes for the U.S. are different?
