Perhaps, what we are observing is something that Arthur C. Clarke hinted at in his series of space odyssey novels: The formation of a solid carbon crystal at the center of a gas giant due to the intense atmospheric pressure and a large concentration of carbon/hydrogen compounds. I'm not much of an astronomer, but a quick check shows that carbon crystals, given enough time, will grow into an octahedral shape with six-sided, hexagonal faces.

Perhaps we're seeing the effects of a gigantic, mountain-sized diamond, suspended by gravity and pressure, at the core of Saturn? Slowly forged over the course of 3.8 billion years?

Go read 2059, Oddyssey III and tell me what you think. It's a neat idea, anyway.
