Anybody interested in starting a Space.com Astronomy Club? Any objections - Moderators?

If possible, I'd like to use some of my webspace to make a page that would have just a picture of the member with their telescope & where they observe from. Not much else other then that: maybe an e-mail address or personal astronomy website address. The main purpose (other then promoting amatuer astronomy) is so we can keep track of each other when talking together here at SDC. I know sometimes a visual is better for me rather then just a name.

It doesn't matter how often you observe or what kind of telescope you have. Bino's would be fine too...and...it's free: no dues!

Anyway, any thoughts?

Brad- Hi!

A new friend at our congregation wants to purchase a telescope and join me star watching. And I will soon purchase a camera cell phone - my first digital camera.

So in the future I may be able to download a picture and join a club - albeit with limited time available.

Meanwhile, I can appreciate wanting an image rather than just a name.

That is what astronomy is all about!

Paradoxically, we have imaged more stars than we can name!

And thank you for promoting astronomy.

Take care,

Paul

Nevers - meanwhile, anything to watch for while I'm watching the lunar eclipse tomorrow night?

crazyeddie- You missed the point - it flew right by you.

Don't you realize you are the one who keeps bringing up that tangent?

You see, any subject you don't want mentioned you should ignore to start with.

For example, consider subject X and assume you don't want to hear about X.

And then you post: "Don't mention X"

The problem is, crazyeddie, that by posting X you have now mentioned what you didn't want mentioned!

You are spoiling things for yourself.

Why not just relax and go with the natural flow of threads?

Nevers I’m in!
Even though I don’t have time much to take my telescope out, Philadelphia doesn’t have the best viewing conditions.

Newtonian
What if the bible is mentioned in historical context?
Nevers- I have not purchased binoculars yet. Yesterday we purchased a camera phone, digital.

That will be my start- I might get a picture of the lunar ecclipse with it - I will try!

However, so far we haven't figured out how to make a phone call with it- it is a very complex albeit small bit of modern technology!

So, I'd best stop posting until after the ecclipse!

Happy lunacy- or, er, lunar see!

Yurkin- Well, of course, the Bible does mention specific constellations - it might come up in a conversation, it might not. Crazyeddie brought it up and has now defeated his purpose!

It is interesting that precession has moved constellations in the sky since Moses (in Job) wrote about constellations:

Ash = Ursa Major (Great Bear)
Kesil = Orion
Kimah = Pleiades stars in Taurus contstellation
"interior rooms of the south" = Constellations in southern hemisphere

Etc.

Yes, historical references might interest some in said club, like me.

And these constellations help as reference points in locating other things we would want to observe.

Clearly observations would be the central interest and pursuit of such a club - wouldn't it?

Sounds good everybody! If you want to send me pictures by e-mail that would be great. During the week I'll work on some kind of format and next weekend I'll put up the page. Just a picture or yourself and telescope (and some info about it), where you live and an e-mail address if you'd like to post that.

Thanks for the input - I still haven't heard from a mod. Maybe I should PM one directly.

I've written a moderator about using "SDC" as a name and about using the Space.com logo. As to date, I've not heard anything yet. Hang in there everybody...

Something like this is what I had in mind. The original (which I'd like to keep at 100kb) had to be reduced to fit this forum and was at 800 x 600 pixels.

Hey Crazy -

Yeah, but add it up...all of mine together might (notice I said "might") touch one of your 'scopes. Tak & Tel...nice!

You are going to love the FS 128 on the planets. Except for an AP nothing even compares to a TAK on the planets. I have my FS 128 on a G-11 mount, you can get away with a G-8 but since I do astrophotography the G-11 is the more stable of the two. (besides the guy I bought it from sold me the G-11 with it and the ST-4 and the guide scope and the etc)

BTW a nice thing about a top quality refractor is the 50 -75 per inch power rule doesn't apply I've been 1000+ on the Moon. (yeah yeah wasted power but talk about up close and personal) If the sky will let you, nothing stops you, increase the power to never never land.
www.siriuslookers.org

Last month or so I thought I would be "gone" for a while but things changed for what I thought was the better. Now, I fear the worst has happened and unfortunatley for me, I must take my leave for what will probably be a long while.

I have made some bad business decisions with a friend of mine and saving money will be a concern to me. I will not be able to afford internet service as my money will be directed in other directions. I don't know, maybe I can find some free service if they still have it anywhere or a pay-as-you-go kind of thing but chances of that are slim to none.

If somebody else wishes to pursue the idea of an SDC Astronomy Club, please, by all means push ahead.

I hope to see ya'll sooner then I can foresee: you've all been great friends. I'll really miss you until that time. Until then, clear and dark skies to ya'll.
