Should we be looking for intelligence on a planetary scale?

We should be looking, of course, but the approach of isolating "stages" of a bio or technosphere is myopically human-centric. It assumes a path like humans that will "poison" a biosphere, then learn from mistakes, and attempt correction. This approach seems to ignore the potential of a species to simply not care about the biosphere. If they advanced technologically fast enough, they may have chosen to strip the planet and leave. Consider how far advanced humanity will be by the time the earth becomes completely uninhabitable if climate change is left unchecked. How far would we advance if we weren't limited by climate concerns? That could be the exointelligence in question. The result may look like an immature biosphere from a distance.
