Apparently Sky News seem to think:

"Shuttle On Repair Mission
Updated: 15:47, Sunday December 10, 2006

Space shuttle astronauts are due to dock with the international space station for complex repair work.

Seven Discovery astronauts are orbiting the station to see what needs to be done to the damaged heat shield before docking with the orbital outpost.

The damage could be critical, said Nasa."

What is this all about? Orbiting the station, damaged heat shield what idiot wrote all that? They are not even near the station and not even started checking the heat shield.

Well spotted - Sky News have really screwed up on that one. I've just sent them the following user feedback:

Quote from current Sky News webpage with headline "Shuttle on Repair Mission":

"Space shuttle astronauts are due to dock with the international space station for complex repair work.

Seven Discovery astronauts are orbiting the station to see what needs to be done to the damaged heat shield before docking with the orbital outpost.

The damage could be critical, said Nasa."

What garbage! - There is (as yet) no "repair work". - the shuttle's mission is to carry on constructing the International Space Station.
The "damaged heat shield" hasn't even been inspected yet! - the shuttle crew will be doing that later today. Nasa have made no statement about "damage being critical".
Sky News should report accurate news - not the confused ramblings of some ignorant hack!
------------------------------------------------------------

I await their response (if any) with interest!

Why does the UK media seem to favor "Nasa" rather than "NASA"? Acronyms are usually all caps. I don't understand. They don't call it the "Bbc" or the "Raf" or "Mod".

I responded to their article too. I wonder if they will bother to admit the mistake or even change it?

.

Never roll in the mud with a pig. Well, then, Wikipedia should check its sources.
Capitializing acronyms is not just an American thing.
The Canadian media, for one, capitalizes acronyms as well - all of them.
This is a purely British phenominon...I guess if you created the English language, you can have your own rules...I guess.
Aren't they owned by Rupert Mordoch, who also runs Fox, home of the infamous "Moon Hoax" documentry?

But the Krell forgot one thing John. The rule is, if the initialism is an acronym - i.e. it is pronounced as a word - then it is written in title case (e.g. Nasa, Nato), whereas if it's an initialism but not an acronym - i.e. pronounced letter by letter - it's given all in caps (e.g. USA, BBC etc).

I reckon it is a matter of custom, because the word 'laser' is, after all, an acronym too.

Some words, like "laser" and "scuba," which is also an acronym (Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus), become part of the language - and loose the capitalization.
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will to strive, to seek, to find and not to yeild. - Tennyson

I thought the rule was...if the letters correspond to an organization where the first letter of each word was capitialized, such as National Aeronautics and Space Administration, that all letters of the acronym should be capitialized.
"laser" or "scuba" are just shortened forms of "things".

Of course, that doesn't explain why the terms such as SRMS, etc.

Am I being anal enough?

" "laser" or "scuba" are just shortened forms of "things"."

That wouldn't do I don't think, because what would a word like 'pram' (perambulator = single word) be, other than a shortened form of a thing (it's not an acronym!)?

(with apologies in advance . . . )

and loose the capitalization.

But how do we know we can capture them again?

;-)

Seriously, I think we need to give up on this one and go ahead and formally switch the definition of

lose: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/lose
and
loose: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/loose

I see it wrong much more often than I see it right, and often wrong in a piece that is otherwise error free.

If we just go ahead and switch the definitions everybody will suddenly get it right!

Thanks for bringing that up spacester.
It is the most commonly misused pair of words in writing nowadays. And since loose is a word, spellcheckers don't catch it. You have to actually read what you wrote to do so.

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Monsters. Being pedantic now and then is a vice of mine.

OT but is it just me or is a new post orphaned?

I cannot get into scipt's 'Simpler Stations', here on M&L, getting a database error; it's been there for 4 hours with no views? I think it's been gremlinized somewhere between php and SQL.

This seemed like the best place to ask, rather than start a thread in Suggestions . . .

Something appears to have barfed with that post. I keep getting the same message.
It probably does belong in suggestions though.

MW

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Hey newsie or other mod, could you start such a thread? It would look more official. Um, you could call it "Problem posts" or something - a place to report a post that ain't working for some reason.

Or I could start a suggestion thread with this suggestion . . . :)

edit:
DUH! my bad, I will RTFM and follow the instructions given and send a message via that form. Might as well give the system a chance to work, eh?

Hey, it was 5:30 here on the left coast when I posted that. Give me a break. This thread has headed wildly off topic.
Could we stick to the original thread?

We've (including me) been sidetracked by acronym capitalization, and a hot button issue with me, the loose/lose thing.

I would suggest these issues would be better served in separate threads on those topics.

I'm interested in the original thread!!

WhineyWayne

But the Krell forgot one thing John.
